Buy an Obama T-Shirt, Help John McCain

cityfile · 06/30/08 09:41AM

Before he's even gone down in history for doing anything, Barack Obama is enjoying the company of the likes of Che Guevara and Bob Marley as a "statement" t-shirt. "Young people are acting like it's some kind of revolution," says a Union Square vendor who sells T-shirts hand-painted with images of Obama. "He's in demand right now. He's selling better than everybody." Naturally, Urban Outfitters is selling a bunch of Obama-slogan shirts—but we wonder how many of the hiptards snapping up "Obama for Yo Mama" and "Barack 'n' Roll" shirts have any idea that their money is going straight to Urban Outfitters' billionaire owner Richard Hayne, staunch conservative and frequent contributor to Republican causes and candidates like Rick Santorum. Ah, the irony: For every Barack t-shirt an idealistic kid buys at UO, a few pennies drop in the campaign coffers of Republicans like John McCain.

The Ice Queen's 20th Coronation

cityfile · 06/30/08 08:27AM

On the 20th anniversary of Anna Wintour's ascension to editor-in-chief of Vogue, the Washington Post's fashion editor Robin Givhan extravagantly eulogizes the "master of the universe who wears her power as comfortably and impeccably as Chanel couture" and reveals that, in case you were going to question her authority, she knows of what she speaks:

Bonnie Fuller Courting the Press, Hatching Plots

cityfile · 06/30/08 07:40AM

Bonnie Fuller, the recently deposed editorial chief of American Media, the company that publishes illustrious titles like the Star and National Enquirer, has been on a press blitz in recent weeks, part of an attempt, we're guessing, to divert attention from the fact she was fired a few weeks ago, lied about it on her mother's grave, and teamed up with a venture capital firm for about five seconds before they, too, cut their ties. On Sunday, Fuller managed to finagle the Times' David Carr into penning an absurdly saccharine-sweet profile of her. It was apparently pegged to some sort of digital venture she has in the works, and yet she revealed next to nothing about her upcoming plans. How Bonnie!

Dieting Tips Courtesy of Al Sharpton

cityfile · 06/30/08 07:06AM

Have you noticed that Al Sharpton's been looking a little slimmer in recent weeks? Why, yes, he has. Al says he's dropped 20 pounds in the past six months thanks to a new exercise regimefour days a week on the treadmill and ellipticaland an "almost starvation-style" diet. "He eats only two meals daily, both before 6 p.m. His breakfast is two hard-boiled eggs and tomato, and his other meal is fish accompanied by a green salad. One day a week, just to mix it up, he throws some chicken on that salad." We'll bet donuts to dollars that if he can keep it up, an Al Sharpton weight loss book will be on bookstore shelves by 2010.

Robert Thurman Has the Creepiest Thoughts

cityfile · 06/30/08 06:23AM

The Times Magazine posed a few questions for Robert A.F. Thurman, America's most famous Buddhist scholar and the father of Uma. Who knew the interview would make us nauseous? NYT: "What do you think about when you meditate?" Thurman: "Usually, some form of trying to excavate any kind of negative thing cycling in the mind and turn it toward the positive. For example, when I am annoyed with Dick Cheney, I meditate on how Dick Cheney was my mother in a previous life and nursed me at his breast."

Pretty Person Dies, Nation In Shock

cityfile · 06/30/08 06:15AM

On Saturday afternoon a young woman committed suicide by jumping out of the window of her lower Manhattan apartment, and because she was a beautiful fashion model, it's obviously much, much sadder than if she were a regular person, and must be analyzed and raked over extensively by journalists and bloggers in every corner of the globe. 20-year-old Ruslana Korshunova, from Kazakhstan, was a "gorgeous supermodel" who had appeared in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, DKNY and Vera Wang, says the Post, and while friends say she wasn't depressed, her messages on social networking sites (obviously they'd be involved somehow) tell another story, according to the Daily News. We expect details involving anorexia and evil model bookers to emerge any second, but real closure probably won't come until Detectives Lupo and Bernard suspect foul play and get to the bottom of it.

Hamptons Mansions Will Not Be Spared

cityfile · 06/27/08 10:05AM

Yet further evidence that the mortgage meltdown is affecting the highest ends of the Hamptons real estate market: This 18,000-square-foot mansion in Bridgehampton, which went into foreclosure late last year and was initially placed on the market for $27 million, is now available for the bargain basement price of "just $19.95 million." The 8-bedroom, 9 1/2-bath manse went into foreclosure late last year. Now desperate measures have been taken to unload the property (including this rather desperate video pitch). But it's only one of 120 Hamptons homes that have gone into foreclosure since the beginning of 2008. Maybe part of the problem with this home, though, has something to do with its amenities. The previous owners put in "a flower-cutting room" so it's entirely possible a foreclosure was just divine retribution of sorts.

Thanks for Sharing, Minnie

It's a proud day for Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Syriana and Traffic: His wife (and Tinsley's sister-in-law) Minnie Mortimer confides that his underwear-fussiness inspired the boxer shorts in her fledgling clothing line: "He had very specific rules for his—elastic must be covered, shorts must have top button to open, not too slouchy so they fit into pants, and on and on." Looks like the husbands in Minnie and Stephen's circle can look forward to some very comfy and supportive birthday gifts! [Paper]

Libel Lawsuit or Elaborate PR Stunt?

cityfile · 06/27/08 07:09AM

The Post is embroiled in another legal spat. Lynsi Smigo, the fiancée of radio host Opie of the "Opie & Anthony" show, has filed a $10 million libel suit against the Post, Page Six editor Richard Johnson, and gossip lowlife Chaunce Hayden for reporting that she'd appeared in a sex tape with MTV's Bam Margera. As the story goes, Hayden—who, in case you're not familiar with his work, is the editor of Steppin' Out, the sort of rag handed out for free to Ashley Dupre types outside of clubs in Sayreville, NJ—provided the tip to Page Six in April. The Post ran the story, but there was no sex tape, which the paper acknowledged when it issued an apology in May. Now the Smigo has filed a lawsuit for $10 million claiming the story left her feeling "humiliated" and "ashamed." (Funny, those are the same emotions that come to mind when we think of dating Opie.) Smigo will be lucky if she walks away with enough cash to cover the limo ride to her wedding, much less the eight-figure sum she's seeking. But we're guessing Opie isn't all that worried. This is, after all, the same radio personality who once encouraged a couple to have sex inside St. Patrick's (a stunt that lost him his job on WNEW). We figure the publicity value of the lawsuit should more than make up for his legal bills.
