Tiger Says Goodbye

cityfile · 12/11/09 04:11PM

The Tiger Woods saga kicked off two full weeks ago. But it wasn't until about 20 minutes ago that he actually admitted—via a posting on his website—that he's been unfaithful to his wife. Woods also says he's taking a hiatus from golf: "After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person." Here's hoping he has cell phone reception at sea!

Restaurant Chain in Fruit and Vegetable Feud

cityfile · 12/11/09 01:58PM

If you stop off for some filet mignon at the Michael Jordan Steak House in Grand Central Station or Strip House on East 12th Street, you may have trouble ordering a salad as an appetizer. The Glazier Group, the company that runs both those restaurants (and used to operate Monkey Bar before it fell into the hands of a certain Condé Nast editor) was sued this week by a fruit and vegetable supplier over $209,000 in unpaid bills. Is this a sign of trouble for the mini-chain? Some sort of protest over one too many mushy tomatoes? Who knows, but you can look over the suit yourself below.

Annie Leibovitz Goes Into Fundraising Mode

cityfile · 12/11/09 11:28AM

Photographer Annie Leibovitz came close to losing everything this past fall when she was sued for failing to pay back the $24 million loan that had been extended to her by Art Capital, which had taken her real estate holdings and the rights to her photos as collateral. Leibovitz managed to avert crisis when she reached a settlement with the firm at the last minute. But she's not out of the woods yet. The Times reports today that as part of the deal, she now owes Art Capital $30 million, and she'll have to pay it back in full by next summer. Leibovitz has been looking to raise cash to pay off the debt in recent months. She's selling limited-edition prints and has been in discussions to write another book. She's also looked into offering bonds backed by her future earnings, something that David Bowie did a few years back. But it's unlikely those efforts will raise the millions she needs and chances are she'll need to take resort to more drastic measures over the coming months. What could that entail? A glimpse of Annie's future after the jump!

The Paris Effect

cityfile · 12/11/09 10:38AM

California has a Chihuahua problem. Shelters there have been overwhelmed by the breed and few people are interested in adopting them, so animal welfare groups are now planning to fly a big bunch of them to New York since they're still popular here. (That's probably because it's the only kind of dog that fits in most NYC apartments.) But why is California teeming with Chihuahuas in the first place? It's all Paris Hilton's fault: "Experts blame the unexpected rise in abandoned California Chihuahuas partly on fans who hoped to emulate celebs like Paris Hilton, who carries one in her handbag, but later became bored with the little creatures and abandoned them." Tory Burch Lists Southampton Spread

• Just four months after she won approval to tear down her Southampton home and build something bigger and better in its place, Tory Burch has put the Meadow Lane property on the market for $17.9 million. She has good reason to sell. In October, Burch went into contract to buy an even bigger property nearby for an estimated $45 million. [WSJ, Sotheby's]

Bernie Madoff Has Settled In Nicely

cityfile · 12/11/09 09:11AM

It's been a year since Bernie Madoff was arrested and charged with running the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. Madoff's life has changed a bit since then. These days he resides in a cell at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, wears a khaki uniform with a number printed on the front (No. 61727-054), and works in the prison kitchen scrubbing pots and pans. But that doesn't mean he's necessarily unhappy. The Journal reports Madoff spends his free time playing bocce, chess and checkers and has made lots of friends behind bars. And he even likes the food, according to two lawyers who visited him. That's good to hear, isn't it? With 1,795 months of his sentence left to go, he'll have the pleasure of eating his next 166,000 meals there. [WSJ]

Mischa Falters, Madonna Fired, More Mess for Tiger

cityfile · 12/11/09 08:14AM

• There's both good and bad news for Mischa Barton. The bad: She's reportedly drinking again and was seen "knocking back shots and drinking margaritas" earlier this week. (As you may remember, that sort of behavior led Mischa to spend some time in the hospital this past summer.) The good news: She supposedly looked "healthy" and "in control" while doing it, so it should be a few months before she hits bottom again and is forced to make a return trip. [P6]
• Think a good thought for Madonna. Louis Vuitton has decided to drop Madge as the face of the brand and replace her with 25-year-old supermodel Lara Stone. [Sun]
• The last 24 hours of Tiger: Holly Sampson, the porn star who had been suspected of having a tryst with Tiger, confirmed the rumor yesterday; meanwhile, Hollywood madam Michelle Braun says Woods spent $60,000 on hookers between 2006 and 2007, was into the "college cutie, girls-next-door look," and was a fan of three-ways, too. Luckily for Tiger, the reports about his dozen or so mistresses (and all the kinky specifics) may not spell disaster for his marriage to Elin Nordegren. Several tabloids report that Woods has come clean to Elin about "all" of his misbehavior in recent days and she's planning to stay with him.

Why Diddy Is the Perfect New Mascot for AOL

Ryan Tate · 12/10/09 06:12PM

AOL has put Sean Combs very publicly in the middle of its directors and managers. A company banking on formulaic, mass-produced content could do worse than the rap mogul, who wished AOL shares luck. They promptly slid.
