An iPhone Isn't Good Enough for Lacey Tisch

cityfile · 08/05/08 10:08AM

In the market for an 18-karat gold iPhone? How about a diamond-encrusted cell with a screen made of sapphire crystals? No? That's probably because you're not Lacey Tisch. The daughter of Loews co-chairman (and billionaire) Andrew Tisch, Lacey took time to expound on the subject for the Sun today, suggesting that consumers are sick of cell phones that simply function. What they really want are luxury models from Prada, Giorgio Armani, and Bang & Olufsen: "What else are you going to put in your $15,000 Birkin bag? Not the latest free phone from Verizon, that's for sure."

The Hillary Show

Did you miss the party that Michael Bloomberg organized for Hillary Clinton last night at Gracie Mansion? Then you missed your chance to mingle with Chevy Chase or sing along with a performance of "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." Uh oh. [NYO]

The Smallest Socialites

cityfile · 08/05/08 07:55AM

Angelina Jolie might think her new twins are pretty special now that she's earned a cool $14 million for the photo rights. But there are plenty of New York socialite moms who think their kids are pretty important, too. Will any of these kids turn into the Tinsley Mortimer or Peter Davis of 2025? Take you best guess at who these little youngsters are related to, then click through for the answers.

The Co-Op Campaign: 895 Park

cityfile · 08/05/08 06:54AM

895 Park Avenue, the Art Deco co-op on the southeast corner of 79th Street, isn't quite as famous as some other Park Avenue co-ops a few blocks to the south, but it easily rivals (or exceeds them) in terms of grandeur. Roughly two-thirds of the building consists of sprawling 14 and 15-room duplexes, the kind of places that have as many fireplaces as you have windows and where even secondary bedrooms have their own dressing rooms. (That still wasn't quite enough for the late socialite Nan Kempner, who lived at 895 Park for nearly five decades: She reportedly turned several of her extra bedrooms over to her clothes.) Naturally, such a palatial building throws off plenty of campaign money. Here is how some 895 Park Avenue residents have placed their bets in this year's presidential race.

Poor Equals Fat, As You've Always Suspected

cityfile · 08/05/08 06:46AM

In one of those patented "prove any thesis with the right selection of quotes" pieces, Page Six mag would like to remind you that the economic downtown is not just bad for your bank balance, it's also bad for your waistline. You see, regular personal training sessions and expensive memberships to pilates studios were preventing many New Yorkers from turning into big fat tubs of lard, but tighter budgeting is putting the squeeze on such luxuries. Darren Spedale, for example, is an investment banker whose bonus (please have a Kleenex at the ready) has been cut by 20%, so he can only pay for the basic membership at Equinox. The ignominy! At least some people have their priorities straight, like a 31-year-old freelance copywriter who lives in Brooklyn, who's planning to put her personal training sessions on a credit card. "I think being fat is probably worse than being in debt," she says, neatly symbolizing our fair city's manifesto.

Happy Birthday

cityfile · 08/05/08 06:31AM

New York's most famous plastic surgery victim, Ms. Jocelyne Wildenstein, turns 68 today. She'll no doubt be heading straight to her plastic surgeon's office to celebrate. Other birthdays: DJ Funkmaster Flex turns 40 and the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch is turning 44. Maureen McCormick, who is still best known as Marcia from The Brady Bunch, turns 52. Real estate expert Edward Lee Cave is 69. Retired Knicks star Patrick Ewing is 46. And we're guessing that Barack Obama's ears are still ringing after his massive celebration in Boston last night, where he was serenaded by Harry Connick Jr., the crooner's 10-year-old daughter, and a crowd of 850 political donors.

The War on Delivery Menus

Me Llamo Miguel

cityfile · 08/04/08 01:04PM

What have you been doing with your free time this summer? Maybe you've been heading out of work early on Fridays to hit the beach or enjoying the weather at an outdoor bar or restaurant. Not Michael Bloomberg! He's been busy brushing up on his Spanish—he's been taking lessons for six years now—and made time for four lessons last week alone. This is totally going to come in handy the next time he hangs out with Shakira. [NYT]
