Sarah Palin, Trendsetter

cityfile · 09/09/08 07:31AM

If you're still wondering how it is that people take Sarah Palin seriously, consider this: Her eyeglasses have caused a run on Kazuo Kawasaki frames, idiot reporters at ABC are calling her glasses the "bipartisan must-have fashion accessory" of the season, and even her hairdo, which the LA Times described as "a study in contrasts, carefree and 'done' at the same time" and noted was longer than "any other major female U.S. political figure's," is becoming all the rage. No word on American parents are now naming their little babies "Trig" in record numbers. [ABC, LAT]

Raffaello Follieri May Take a Plea

cityfile · 09/09/08 07:10AM

Raffaello Follieri may be close to taking a plea deal, reports the Wall Street Journal today. The dapper Italian playboy and former boyfriend of Anne Hathaway (who looks a bit like a '50s film star in his Journal portrait) is accused of bilking a long list of investors, such as supermarket kingpin Ron Burkle. For the past few weeks, he's been locked up in lower Manhattan, unable to come up with $21 million in bail money. Now, the paper reports, the alleged con man is considering a plea deal that would keep him behind bars for four to five years. Follieri has yet to make a final decision yet, though, and there's still a chance he'll go to trial. If he does, we're sure he'd be positively elated to have you contribute to his defense by making a donation to that phony "foundation" of his, the Paypal account for which is still active.

Sean Avery's Big Screen Treatment

cityfile · 09/09/08 06:52AM

Anna Wintour may have thought that the spectacle of Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada was the last time she'd see a version of herself on the big screen (until her ghost sees her inevitable posthumous biopics, that is—do they have movie theaters in hell?) but today brings news that New Line is making a movie—a rom-com, no less!—about hockey star Sean Avery's experience as a Vogue intern. No other details are yet forthcoming, which only permits our imaginations to run wild: Who will our hunky hero's love interest be? What fashion-related obstacles will keep them apart for 90 minutes? And will André Leon Talley be played by an actual black person this time? Our breath is bated.

cityfile · 09/09/08 06:13AM

Bank of America, the "official" bank of the New York Yankees, is now finalizing a deal to become the primary sponsor of the new Yankees stadium, a pact that could be worth $20 million a year. The likely losing bidder: Jamie Dimon's JPMorganChase. [NYP]

Simon & Schuster Thrilled, Grammarians Not So Much

cityfile · 09/09/08 06:03AM

Good news for those of you who have been worried about Tori Spelling's personal finances. (Not such good news for aspiring authors who still believe the "good stuff floats to the top.") Tori's creatively-titled 288-page memoir, sTORI Telling, will take over as No. 1 on the New York Times best-sellers list this Sunday. It's been on the list for 14 weeks, and is already in its 19th printing. [People]

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

cityfile · 09/08/08 02:54PM

This week's issue of New York features 54 side-by-side examples of how the city's landscape has changed thanks to the real estate boom: "In the past fifteen fat years, more than 76,000 new buildings have gone up, more than 44,000 were razed, another 83,000 were radically renovated—a rate of change that evokes those time-lapse nature films in which flowers spring up and wither in a matter of seconds." Plaza Buyer Sues

cityfile · 09/08/08 01:55PM

Meet Russian financier Andrei Vavilov, who paid a mere $53.5 million for a triplex penthouse at the Plaza and is now suing to get his $10.7 million deposit back. His complaints? "Unobstructed floor to ceiling windows," "lower than represented ceiling heights," and "unappealing drainage grates." Good luck with that. [NYO]

A Day in the Life of Dr. Fredric Brandt

cityfile · 09/08/08 10:15AM

It's not clear which is the greater mystery: Why women flock to dermatologist-to-the-stars Fredric Brandt when his wildly askew aesthetic judgment is displayed on his smooth, shiny visage for all the world to see, or why the good doctor himself chooses to ignore the evidence of his own mirror to self-administer amounts of botox and fillers that, he admits, would require a payment plan were he not getting them at cost. As a journalist discovers when she spends a day at Brandt's East 34th Street clinic, these are not questions that trouble the patients—27 in a typical 10-hour day—who joyfully submit to multiple injections, lasers, and Brandt's more-is-better attitude.

Graydon's Deep Pockets

cityfile · 09/08/08 09:36AM

Graydon Carter is paid a very comfy salary to serve as the editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair (it's reportedly in the neighborhood of $2 million a year) and the perks that come along with the job are priceless. But is it enough to plow your cash into various restaurants around town? Probably not. A couple of weeks ago, we learned that longtime Carter pal Ron Perelman happened to own the building occupied by Carter's Waverly Inn. Over the weekend, Page Six mentioned that Ron Perelman was possibly teaming up with Jon Bon Jovi to reopen the Blue Parrot, the Tex-Mex restaurant in East Hampton, and added that "[Perelman] is said to be a backer of Graydon Carter's Monkey Bar."
