Mort Zuckerman Gets His Journal For Free

cityfile · 10/15/08 10:13AM

Real estate developer and Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman doesn't make too many appearances on Fox News or Fox Business Channel, which may have something to do with the fact both networks are controlled by his arch-enemy, Rupert Murdoch. Today Zuckerman appeared on Fox Business to discuss the bailout and made the egregious error of quoting a figure from the Financial Times. Didn't Mort get the memo in the green room that you're only supposed to cite Murdoch's Wall Street Journal on the air? Apparently not! But the tension between the two billionaires seems to have cooled: Zuckerman says he thinks the Journal has only gotten better since News Corp. took over, and—just in case you're tuning in, Rupert!—Mort would also like you to know he thanks you kindly for his free subscription. Also: Zuckerman thinks the bailout should have been extended to newspaper publishers, too. Now that would be convenient, wouldn't it?

Pomeranc Talks Up the LES

cityfile · 10/15/08 10:10AM

Now that he has the Thompson LES to promote, hotelier Jason Pomeranc has all sorts of great things to say about the Lower East Side. In fact, "the Lower East Side is my favorite neighborhood in New York," he tells Fashion Week Daily. No word on whether that means he'd actually live there himself—his loft happens to be located in SoHo—although if he does decide to move and elects to stay at the Thompson LES while in transition, we'd recommend that he not use the hotel's WiFi. Experts Enjoy Telling Us Why Crisis Happened

cityfile · 10/15/08 09:41AM

The only people who have seen their career prospects rise exponentially in recent weeks? Those "experts"—usually researchers in economics or psychology—who can explain why a big bunch of men in suits got so drunk on cash that the country is going to have the saddest Christmas ever. It must be great to wake up to emails from journalists eager for authoritative quotes about how and why the meltdown happened, especially when you can imply you warned of problems ahead, but no one listened!

Madonna and Guy: It's Official

cityfile · 10/15/08 08:59AM

Madonna and filmmaker Guy Ritchie are divorcing, according to Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg. The couple is now asking the media to "maintain respect for their family at this difficult time." (Good luck with that.) And the announcement is not expected to disrupt Madge's touring schedule. She performs tonight and tomorrow in Boston. [AP]

Candidates' Facial Features Reveal All

cityfile · 10/15/08 08:11AM

Democrats are thrilled to see Obama ahead by more than 10 points in the polls. But they're not counting their chickens just yet: Al Gore was leading the polls in mid-October of 2000 and then, well, he won except that he lost. But if you're a Democrat and looking for further evidence that you're going to have a reason to celebrate on November 4th, there's good news courtesy of an authority you can really have faith in: Rose Rosetree, face reader! Salon had the expert physiognomist gaze at pictures of all the important people, and Barack's great big forehead might as well have "leader" tattooed on it: Its wideness means "having ideas, goals, ideals" that will overcome the "obstacles that might get in your way." Even more reassuring: Obama and Joe Biden are "nostril twins."

Only Jay Leno Can Save Harley-Davidson Now

cityfile · 10/15/08 07:52AM

Another victim of the economy: Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Despite an ad campaign intended to counter the perception that buying a $35,000 bike might not be the wisest idea at the moment—the ad's tagline is "Screw it, Let's Ride"—sales are now plummeting and the stock is down two-thirds since its record high in 2006. Vikram Pandit Unloads On the UES

cityfile · 10/15/08 07:21AM

♦ Embattled Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit is putting some extra cash in his pocket: He just sold a four-bedroom apartment at 300 East 85th Street for $2.25 million to Pantelis Apessos, an executive at Citigroup. Vikram and wife Swati won't actually be moving, though: The couple purchased a 10-room spread at the Beresford for $17.85 million back in 2007. And the Pandits still own two apartments at 310 East 53rd, which they purchased for $9.8 million in 2006. [Cityfile]

Meghan McCain: America's Youth Will Vote Republican

cityfile · 10/15/08 07:13AM

Meghan McCain, the 24-year-old daughter of John and Cindy, turned up on Fox News yesterday to promote her illustrated children's book, which was published last month because she felt it would be instructive for the kids of America to learn about her father's life story, not because she's, like, looking to cash in on her dad's presidential bid or anything. Naturally, Meghan was in gentle hands with anchor Neil Cavuto, although he did ask her at one point why it was that voters her age were overwhelmingly lining up behind Obama in November and not her supporting her dad. Meghan's answer? Younger voters aren't leaning towards Obama—that's just the liberal media telling everyone that! And she should know because, like, she has a blog, which tons and tons of young people visit every single day. So it's settled. The youth vote is a toss-up!

Book Publishers Should Now Panic Too

cityfile · 10/15/08 06:44AM

Like everyone else, people who work in book publishing are bracing themselves for tough times, reports the Observer's Leon Neyfakh. According to an anonymous publishing exec, there's going to be an inevitable domino effect due to the economy: Newspapers (for as long as they actually exist, presumably!) will be carrying fewer ads and therefore fewer book reviews, so potential readers won't know about new titles, so bookstores will order fewer copies, so publishers will get increasingly nervous about signing up unknown authors, so unless you're Lourdes Ciccone Leon pitching a memoir about your mother's divorce, you might as well forget it, basically. It sort of sounds plausible, except for one thing.

Street Talk: Sign Here, Sign Now

cityfile · 10/15/08 05:15AM

♦ How did Hank Paulson's negotiations with the CEOs of the nation's largest banks go down on Monday? There were no negotiations, actually. He handed them a term sheet and told them to sign it on the spot if they knew what was good for them. [WSJ, NYT]
♦ Whether or not the federal government make actually make money taking a take in all these banks is still up in the air. [NYT]
♦ Will the bailout really change the way Wall Street CEOs are paid? Nah. They "will find other creative ways of paying their executives as they see fit." Which means Lloyd Blankfein will still take home tens of millions. [NYT, Bloomberg]
♦ The credit markets thawed ever so slightly yesterday following the news the U.S. government would take a stake in major banks. It could take weeks or months for things to really improve, though. [WSJ]

Ivanka Trump: Brown-Bagger, Blogger

cityfile · 10/14/08 03:01PM

Ivanka Trump has a big, new business venture in the works. What is it? No one seems to know for sure, except that her partner in the venture is the multi-national food conglomerate ConAgra and it will (finally!) free "working Americans from the lunch rut of eating the same boring, expensive or unhealthy food at their desks day after day." Why would this be an issue of concern to Ivanka, you ask? On the new blog she's set up to market the product, the heiress, model, real estate executive, jewelry designer, and reality TV star explains that she's sick and tired of shlepping her lunch to work in a brown paper bag every day.

Vogue Predicts the Future

cityfile · 10/14/08 01:29PM

The View from Ron Perelman's Townhouse

cityfile · 10/14/08 12:24PM

Urbanite has some photos of the most ghastly Halloween scenes you're likely to find on the Upper East Side. The owner of a townhouse on East 63rd Street has decorated the exterior of the building with skulls, severed limbs (roasting on a barbeque grill), and a bloody, life-size pig hanging from a rope. We don't know for sure, but we're going to assume kosher-eating billionaire Ron Perelman is not all that pleased with his neighbor's sense of festiveness. More pics of the gruesomeness here.
