Courtroom Sketches From the Astor Trial

cityfile · 06/16/09 08:11AM

It's really a shame there haven't been cameras at the trial of Anthony Marshall, the son of Brooke Astor who now stands accused on plundering his mother's fortune. Hundred (thousands?) of Upper East Siders would have been glued to their TV sets the past few weeks. Sketch artist Jane Rosenberg has been in attendance the past few weeks to document the goings-on with paper and colored pencils. Can you identify the notable people above who've appeared on the witness stand? As always, answers below.

The Skirmish Over Junk Food

cityfile · 06/16/09 07:15AM

Meet MeMe Roth. She is at war with the birthday cake and the living incarnation of why you are so psyched not to be a school administrator in Manhattan. This mother of two, who sends her children, ages 10 and 7, to P.S. 9 on the Upper West Side, is also the president of National Action Against Obesity ("a one-woman campaign run out of Roth's home in Manhattan," according to the Guardian, which recently profiled Roth in a piece strongly suggesting she has an eating disorder.) As such, Me!Me! feels, uhm, passionately about protecting children, particularly her own, from obesity and all its associated health risks. In short, she is a terror.

CFDA Winners

cityfile · 06/16/09 04:30AM

The CFDA Awards were handed out last night. The big winners at the Oscars of fashion: Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy (left, with Kirsten Dunst) took home the award for womenswear designer of the year; Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez's Proenza Schouler won in the accessories category; the prize for menswear went to Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders and Italo Zucchelli of Calvin Klein; and Alexander Wang nabbed the award for emerging talent. Fashion's biggest booster won something, too. Thanks to her "meteoric rise as a style icon," Diane von Furstenberg gave Michelle Obama a special award at last night's ceremony, although, sadly, the crowd had to settle for a pre-taped acceptance speech by the First Lady. Roman and Dasha Set Sail

cityfile · 06/15/09 03:40PM

With all the depressing talk about the stock market (the Dow fell close to 200 points today), and struggling banks (Citigroup chairman Dick Parsons said today he had no idea when the bank would be able to pay back the $45 billion it's borrowed), it's nice to see that some people are still spending recklessly and entertaining the rest of us in the process. Despite the fact he's lost an estimated $20 billion amid the economic meltdown, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's latest toy —the world's largest and most expensive privately-owned yacht—made an appearance late last week.

Going Up: Everything

cityfile · 06/15/09 03:14PM

It's a good thing everyone is doing so well financially right now, because everything is about to get more expensive. The New York City Council endorsed a plan today to raise the city's share of the sales tax, and if the measure is eventually approved by Albany, 8.875 percent will be tacked on to your bills instead of the current 8.375 percent. Those fractions certainly do add up, though! The change is expected to pump an extra $500 million a year into city coffers. [NYT]

Science Proves What Cindy Adams Has Known For a Century

cityfile · 06/15/09 01:36PM

Gossip is good for you. Or at least that was the conclusion of a study conducted at the University of Michigan, which aired up 160 women and had half of them proofread a botany paper and the other half dish about their personal lives. Twenty minutes later, the chatty Cathys had increased levels of progesterone, which is linked to "long term physical health and has anti-stress effects," whereas the women stuck talking about plants had decreased levels. So, basically, oversharing with strangers is good for your health. Debating Petunias, not so much. Of course, the more interesting study would examine the potenially salubrious effects of reading about other people's personal lives. Look for that study, sponsored by Us Weekly, E!, and Perez Hilton, in the coming months. [NYDN]

Tim Geithner Is Just Like You and Me

cityfile · 06/15/09 01:03PM

You probably assumed the job of Treasury Secretary came with half a dozen manservants. It doesn't, apparently. Tim Geithner was in New York City today to appear on a panel moderated by Time managing editor, Richard Stengel. Before the event kicked off, though, Geithner was spotted at the Starbucks downstairs. Buying his own coffee. Shocking, isn't it? Here's what went down, according to CNN's Donna Rosato:

Prison Isn't the Same Without Payes

cityfile · 06/15/09 12:30PM

The Post has a follow-up to its story last week about the Hasidic man who hosted a bar mitzvah party for his son at the downtown prison known as the Tombs. It turns out the prison chaplain, an Orthodox rabbi, also allowed the same inmate to host an engagement party for his daughter a few months later. And he wasn't the only inmate who received special treatment. Another inmate was permitted to have a satellite truck set up outside the prison complex so he could watch a relative's wedding via a live feed from Israel; other inmates were allowed access to the rabbi's private office, so they could use his "unmonitored phone to call sports bookies and criminal cohorts." The rabbi hasn't been dismissed yet; he's only been suspended for two weeks. So if you're planning to commit a crime, it really couldn't hurt to keep this costume with you at all times. Even if you don't get caught, at the very least you won't have to go shopping when Halloween rolls around next year. [NYP]

Wedding Announcements and Other Inalienable Rights

cityfile · 06/15/09 11:02AM

If you submit your wedding announcement to the New York Times and they decide not to run it, do you have legal grounds to sue the paper? No, sadly, you don't. But sketch comedy group, Kasper Hauser, has come up with an ad for a fake law firm that promises to do just that. It's a promotional video for the group's new book, Weddings of the Times, which was published last week. But it's amusing all the same. The video is after the jump.

Items that can be found inside the home of Barneys creative director Simon Doonan and interior design maven Jonathan Adler, per this week's New Yorker: Two garden gnomes. A bar full of glasses emblazoned with skull-and-crossbones decals and labels reading "Arsenic," "Strychnine," "Cyanide," and "Wood Alcohol." And a large leather hippopotamus. Now you know! And after you're done reading about it, you'll find a few photos of the apartment here. [NYer]

Let the (Imaginary) Backlash Begin

cityfile · 06/15/09 09:40AM

Back in May, Calvin Klein Jeans erected an billboard on Houston Street featuring four teenagers making out. The campaign was designed to stir up controversy: When it was first announced, the company gleefully revealed that a companion TV spot had been banned by American television networks before it even aired. Well, it's been more than month now, but the Daily News has finally managed to find some people outraged by the sexually-charged billboard. People like Rev. Don Wildmon, who runs the American Family Association and who says the billboard "shows a lack of respect for our society." Of course, Wildmon may have to squint pretty hard to see the billboard from his vantage point: He lives in Tupelo, Mississippi. [NYDN]

Ruth Madoff Remains Shunned, Despised

cityfile · 06/15/09 08:37AM

Ruth Madoff is the "most vilified spouse of a financial rogue in history," have you heard? The Times checked in on the "loneliest woman in New York" over the weekend and it seems little has changed for the wife of fraudster Bernie Madoff. She spends most of her time "confined" to her East 64th Street apartment, she no longer works out at the nearby Equinox, and she generally only steps foot outside to buy food or pay a visit her lawyer. And while several nearby businesses have instituted Madoff bans over the past few months—such as the Pierre Michel salon on East 57th Street where Ruth turned up faithfully every six weeks for "Soft Baby Blonde" highlights—at least one says it would be willing to allow her back inside: The general manager of the restaurant Sette Mezzo says he'd welcome her back if she comes up with the $160 she and her husband owe for a meal back in December. So that's good news, isn't it? [NYT]
