Wisconsin's Plan to Sic the National Guard on Unions

Jim Newell · 02/15/11 05:13PM

Wisconsin's new Republican governor, Scott Walker, wants to get his austerity budget rammed through the state's new Republican legislature, and he just supposedly doesn't have the time to deal with public employee unions. So he's introduced a proposal to eliminate workers' collective bargaining rights for wages, pensions, and other benefits while sharply raising their required contributions. And if these employees respond by striking? The proposal allows allows state authorities to fire workers who "participate in an organized action to stop or slow work" or who "are absent for three days without approval of the employer."

South Dakota Bill Could Legalize Murder of Abortion Providers

Jim Newell · 02/15/11 03:29PM

Killing a doctor who performs abortions could soon be legal in South Dakota — that is, if a bill passed out of committee in the state House of Representatives on Monday, which makes it a "justifiable homicide" for someone to kill anyone attempting to harm an unborn child, becomes law.

Congress Cracks Down on Naked TSA Photo Leaks

Jim Newell · 02/15/11 02:28PM

Are you worried about those airport security scans of your penis and vagina making it onto the Internet? First of all, don't flatter yourself. But just in case, the Senate voted 98-0 today in favor of an amendment "that would punish anyone who misuses images from full-body security scanners at airports with a $100,000 fine or a year in prison." How hot would a person need to be to make these penalties "worth it"? A 5.5 on the 1-10 scale, or lower?

Hilarious Arizona Senate Race in the Works

Jim Newell · 02/15/11 01:09PM

With the news of old Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl not seeking reelection in 2012, state Republicans are already considering possible successors. Is Arizona, like Egypt, "prepared for democracy," or will this bad-child state elect some nutter or authoritarian child of Dan Quayle?

Injured Theatergoers Sue Billy Elliot Musical

Richard Lawson · 02/15/11 12:54PM

The Spider-Man crew can breathe a sigh of relief. It seems they're not the only Broadway folks putting people's lives and limbs at risk every time they raise the curtain. Two Kansas City natives are suing the producers of the Broadway musical Billy Elliot, claiming that, while watching the show from the front row, they were both hit by an errant prop and were subsequently hospitalized. They are each suing for $2 million, or roughly two Broadway tickets' worth. (Broadway shows are expensive!) The producers have not yet issued a statement about the lawsuit.

'Minuteman' Convicted of Murdering Nine-Year-Old

Max Read · 02/15/11 03:10AM

On Monday, a jury in Tucson found former beautician Shawna Forde guilty of killing nine-year-old Brisenia Flores and her father Raul in a bizarre paramilitary raid on the Flores home in 2009. Forde, the leader of a group called "Minutemen American Defense," is what you might call an anti-immigration activist, if you include murdering fourth-graders under your definition of "activism"; two years ago, she and two of her fellow "minutemen" burst into the home of the Flores family, apparently looking for drugs that they planned on using to fund their creepy military games, and shot Raul, Brisenia, and Brisineia's mother Gina. Gina survived by playing dead and later testified against Forde.

Iran Wastes No Time in Suppressing Protesters

Jim Newell · 02/14/11 05:37PM

Whatever coalition remains from the defeated Iranian uprisings of 2009 hit the streets again today for demonstrations, hoping to build on momentum from the 2011 Tunisia-Egypt Wave of Freedom Everywhere. After all, the Iranian regime had been encouraging the demonstrations in Egypt; why shouldn't it allow such protests in its own streets? Because then the Iranian regime might get overthrown, duh.

Shirley Sherrod Sues Andrew Breitbart

Jim Newell · 02/14/11 03:06PM

Shirley Sherrod, who was fired from her USDA job last year after Andrew Breitbart posted online an edited video of her, has filed a lawsuit for libel and slander against Breitbart in D.C. Superior Court. The suit was filed on Friday, and Breitbart was served with it this weekend, while attending the Conservative Political Action Conference, according to The New York Times.

President Obama Unveils His Budget Plans

Jim Newell · 02/14/11 02:14PM

The White House released its big budget proposal today for fiscal year 2012, which begins in October. There's been talk about major cuts the administration would be making, and this proposal would supposedly cut $1.1 trillion in deficits over the next ten years. It mostly accomplishes that through a five-year spending cap on non-defense discretionary funding, an area that only accounts for 12% of the budget anyway and isn't related to America's long-term debt problems. But it may make President Obama seem tough to Washington Post columnists, so it must be done!

Donald Trump Has Made an Enemy of Ron Paul

Jim Newell · 02/14/11 12:39PM

Republican tribal god Rep. Ron Paul hit the television circuit this morning to celebrate his big straw poll win at this weekend's insane Conservative Political Action Conference. How does Paul feel now, knowing that Republican voters want him to be president, at least according to this straw poll for which he bused in hundreds of supporters? He's flattered as always. Such a humble man, that Doctor Congressman Ron Paul.

More Demonstrations Across Middle East

Jeff Neumann · 02/14/11 08:21AM

Following the popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, countries all across the Middle East and North Africa are seeing small but growing anti-government protests, proving that the status quo is no longer sustainable. Here's a quick look at what's happening today in the region:
