The LA Times reports tonight that border enforcement officials learned of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's extremist connections "as he was en route to Detroit and had decided to question him when he landed." Damn. Better luck next time, guys! [LAT]

Meadows Field airport in Bakersfield, CA was shut down for much of the morning when a passenger's luggage tested positive for TNT. And there was "suspicious material" in it! Turns out the tests were bogus; the material was just four bottles of Gatorade filled with honey. A sheriff told the AP ominously, "It could be honey... it could be honey mixed with something else." As Adrian points out, idiots who walk the wrong way through airport security—like the guy who forced 10,000 people to evacuate a Newark terminal last night—will always happen. But the pandemonium Newark's wrong-wayer caused? Preventable.

How best to protect America from the newly urgent threat of terrorists going the wrong way through airport security? Human tire spikes? Subway turnstiles? Boom Boom Room bouncers? Nothing. Nothing will ever completely stop idiots from wrong-waying airport security.

While we debate the merits of intrusive screening methods, some guy at Newark International Airport foiled TSA with the ingenious plot of walking the wrong way through the exit of a terminal checkpoint. The terminal is on lock-down.
