Bacon, Kate Upton, and Other Things You Can't Make Fun of On Twitter

Drew Magary · 05/11/12 04:23PM

I've dicked around on Twitter long enough to be able to have a composite persona of it in my head. If Twitter were a person, it would look like a hipster and it would like hipster music, but it would fucking HATE hipsters. It would be socially liberal, but it would totally respect Ron Paul for being genuine about his nutjob views. It would constantly be arguing with itself as to whether or not it liked watching "Girls." And it would come after you with a claw hammer to the face if you dared to rail against the following subjects.

Requiem For a White MC

peter 'pete nice' nash · 05/10/12 09:10AM

Last week, after learning that Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys had died at 47, Gawker asked sometimes Deadspin contributor Peter Nash—also known as Prime Minister Pete Nice of 3rd Bass—to share his thoughts about MCA's legacy and being a white MC during the golden age of New York hip hop. He obliged.

Here's the Coldplay Tribute Cover of the Beastie Boys Nobody Asked For

Louis Peitzman · 05/05/12 02:16PM

Well, their heart is in the right place. During last night's Hollywood Bowl concert, Coldplay decided to pay tribute to the Beastie Boys' Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died yesterday at 47. The odd acoustic cover of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)" — which Coldplay frontman Chris Martin sings rather than raps — is being hailed as a "touching tribute" and a "heartfelt rendition." Sure, it's a nice thought, but does anything about this cover actually recall the Beastie Boys?

R.I.P. Nathanial Hornblower: MCA's Hilarious Response to a Bad New York Times Review

Emma Carmichael · 05/04/12 05:20PM

In 2004, The New York Times' Stephanie Zacharek negatively reviewed the video for the Beastie Boys' new single "Ch-Check It Out." MCA a.k.a. Adam Yauch, who died today at the age of 47, had directed the video under his pseudonym Nathanial Hornblower. He didn't take kindly to Zacharek's review, and let her know in a letter to the Times demanding, among other things, that she send him a goat. Read more »

Here's Jay-Z's 2009 Tribute to Adam Yauch and the Beastie Boys

Emma Carmichael · 05/04/12 03:00PM

Back in summer 2009, the Beastie Boys were forced to pull out of their scheduled headlining performance at the All Points West music festival in Jersey City, N.J. Yauch had just announced that he'd been diagnosed with cancer, and the group was forced to cancel a lot of shows as he sought treatment.

Happy Birthday

cityfile · 08/05/09 06:43AM

The scariest woman in New York, Jocelyne Wildenstein, turns 69 today. Let's hope she doesn't mark the occasion by paying another visit to her plastic surgeon. Retired astronaut Neil Armstrong is turning 79 today. Retired basketball player Patrick Ewing turns 47. DJ Funkmaster Flex is 41. Actress Loni Anderson is turning 63. High-end Manhattan real estate broker Edward Lee Cave is 70. Adam Yauch, one of the founding members of The Beastie Boys, is turning 44. The Brady Bunch's Maureen McCormick is 53. And Dawn Richard of Danity Kane celebrates her 26th birthday today.

Happy Birthday

cityfile · 08/05/08 06:31AM

New York's most famous plastic surgery victim, Ms. Jocelyne Wildenstein, turns 68 today. She'll no doubt be heading straight to her plastic surgeon's office to celebrate. Other birthdays: DJ Funkmaster Flex turns 40 and the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch is turning 44. Maureen McCormick, who is still best known as Marcia from The Brady Bunch, turns 52. Real estate expert Edward Lee Cave is 69. Retired Knicks star Patrick Ewing is 46. And we're guessing that Barack Obama's ears are still ringing after his massive celebration in Boston last night, where he was serenaded by Harry Connick Jr., the crooner's 10-year-old daughter, and a crowd of 850 political donors.

No Escape To Italy For Anne Hathaway Ex

Ryan Tate · 06/26/08 07:41AM
  • Anne Hathaway's Italian ex-boyfriend, accused con-man Rafaello Follieri, originally had planned a big spontaneous "vacation" to Italy for his "birthday" Wednesday, but of course he's in jail now, so no "dining patio, huge cellar of expensive wines, pricey pastas and locally caught seafood" for him. What are the celebrities doing?

Gawker · 04/25/03 11:00AM

Choire Sicha speculates on what the celebrities in New York are doing right now: "Isaac Mizrahi is scooping Harry's shit off Fifth Avenue, using only a green plastic bag. Adam Yauch is eating day-old half-off vegan corn muffins from the Rastafarian Bakery on Lorimer Street. Jon Stewart is in Fort Lee, New Jersey, in a rent-by-the-hour Pink Pussycat motel with a 19-year-old Cuban-Korean transgender prostitute, and he is having the time of his life. Sandy Weill is shuffling on his marble-floored bathroom to a hot Missy Elliott remix. David Byrne is staring down a Norwegian subway accordian player, stealing music with his mind. Megan Mullally is having a lemon-ginger tea in her sunny-yellow kitchen nook, talking to a girlfriend about their first abortions and how much she didn't like Madonna."
