Life is a highway, I wanna ride it all night long (or until an enormous saw blade physically prevents me from doing so). That is a terrifying actual thing that happened to a driver last week on the Chongqing expressway in central China: a large circular saw blade buried itself a foot and a half deep into the hood of his truck, forcing him to stop. The man was reportedly shaken, but unhurt.

Three or four of the five-foot blades fell from an equipment truck that had swerved onto the median while traveling in the opposite direction, local news sources reported, according to the Telegraph. Only one of the bouncing death traps—the one that nearly killed the driver of the pickup—made it through the bushes and back onto the roadway.

“I heard a ‘bang’ and then I saw all the white smoke in front of me. I almost lost control of my car,” the man, identified as Mr. Xiang, told local reporters.

Local police put an optimistic spin on the accident, saying that at a higher speed or a slightly different angle, the blade would have cut into the cabin and hit Xiang. It’s lucky for him he wasn’t driving faster.

Then again, somewhat unlucky that a giant metal avatar of spinning death just happened to come loose at the exactly angle and timing necessary to slice through a large chunk of his vehicle and stop terrifyingly close to his face. Glass half-full, though, right?
