A magnitude-7.8 earthquake stuck Ecuador on Saturday night, leaving 77 dead and over 500 more injured. The quake, the strongest in the country since 1979, left it in a national state of emergency.

According to NBC News, the damage was worse in towns along the nation’s northwestern coast, and already 10,000 military troops and 3,500 police have been dispatched to help. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that large waves could possible begin rolling in on some coasts, but the government has yet to issue a tsunami alert.
