Seth Abramovitch · 07/10/11 11:06PM

The bassist for progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria was arrested Sunday for walking into a Massachusetts Walgreens and telling a worker he had a bomb, and would detonate it if he wasn't given Oxycontin. The clerk gave Michael Todd, 30, six bottles of the drug, and he hopped in a taxi and sped away.

The Best Moment from the Mob Wives Reunion Special

Matt Cherette · 07/10/11 10:50PM

Two weeks ago, Mob Wives ended its first season with—what else?—a knock-down, drag-out fight between man-sharing former friends Karen Gravano (daughter of Sammy "The Bull") and Drita D'avanzo. And while their tussle was inevitably rehashed on tonight's Wendy Williams-hosted reunion show, it wasn't the best part of it.

Today in Rollercoaster Ups and Downs

Seth Abramovitch · 07/10/11 10:06PM

You're either a rollercoaster person, or you're not. I thought I was one, once, until I rode something called "X" at Magic Mountain that spit fire at me and jerked me around so violently, I actually thought I might not make it. It took a photo at the most terrifying part, and the look on my face is, quite simply, the look of a person who thinks they are about to die.

Take a Tour of America's First Gay Hotel Chain

Remy Stern · 07/10/11 10:01PM

There are gay bars, gay nightclubs, and even gay cruises, so why not gay hotels? Such was the thinking of Brian Gorman, who recently opened the Miami branch of the first (openly) gay hotel chain. Called Lords, the new outpost is a renovated 1930s deco house done up by the New York-based design studio BHDM in bright yellows and aquamarines, midcentury-modern-inspired furniture, and patches of glitz and glam.

Mad Bather in Central Park Reservoir

Seth Abramovitch · 07/10/11 09:09PM

A "white male in his 40s" (isn't it always?) hopped the chain-link barricade around the Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park on Sunday, and leaped in for a refreshing swim. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the man, bobbing joyously about 20 feet from the northeast edge, flatly refused to emerge. Three firefighters then swam over to him "with a yellow rope and lassoed him." He was checked by paramedics for signs of drowning, for some reason, and taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he's listed as in "stable condition." Feel free to direct your flowers and teddy bear gift baskets to "Stubborn Reservoir Guy, c/o St. Luke's."

Nancy Grace Can't Let Casey Anthony Go

Matt Cherette · 07/10/11 08:27PM

After a Florida jury acquitted Casey Anthony of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, on Tuesday, some were hoping HLN host Nancy Grace would finally eat crow for the years-long media war she waged against Anthony. She didn't, of course. And it's clear she won't be letting the case go anytime soon either.

Newsweek's New Sarah Palin Article: The Highlights

Lauri Apple · 07/10/11 06:59PM

Long-form commercial star and potential presidential candidate Sarah Palin appears on the cover of the upcoming Newsweek wearing her favorite comfy sweatshirt. It's not a Real-American sweatshirt, because it lacks an American flag applique—but hey, let's not fuss! Fussing over fashion is elitist.

Chicago Loses Its Shit Over Two 'Terror' Bricks

Lauri Apple · 07/10/11 05:20PM

Emmett DeFrisco became Chicago's most famous cosplay kid yesterday after someone found his homemade, duct-taped, bricks-and-wires contraption in a public park, determined that the unusual object was a Suspicious Package, and called law enforcement. The whole park got shut down because of this thing!

Torso Appears on Recycling Plant Conveyor Belt

Max Read · 07/10/11 04:44PM

A "butchered torso" was found at a recycling plant in Seattle over the weekend, apparently just "rolling by on a conveyer belt." It's unclear where the body had been separated from its other parts, but it was apparently "mixed in with materials from a construction site." We appreciate that everyone, including murderers, is "going green," but be aware that human bodies are not, in fact, recyclable. (They can be composted.) [Seattle Post-Intelligencer via NYDN]

Summer Camp Just as Unbearable as College Now

Max Read · 07/10/11 03:38PM

Thanks to America's stupid "child labor laws," you can't force your kids to work at your law firm this summer. That means: Summer camp. But which camp to choose? You don't want just any old collection of log cabins around a lake filled with children's bodies. No: You need a place with evidence-based instruction and measurable skill-development!

Virginia County Cracks Down on Immigrant Coffee Klatsch

Lauri Apple · 07/10/11 03:17PM

Since 1997, immigrants hailing from North Africa and the Middle East have met at a Starbucks in Falls Church, Virginia to mix, mingle, and help each other adjust to This American Life. In late June, however, the outdoor tables and chairs where they've liked to hang all disappeared.

Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson Give Birth

Max Read · 07/10/11 02:04PM

Congratulations are in order! Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl and clothing person, gave birth to a baby girl on Sunday, just a day after actress Kate Hudson gave birth to a baby boy. (The fathers are soccer star David Beckham and Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, respectively.) Both mothers gave birth in Los Angeles, so maybe, just maybe, there was some kind of mix-up and the Hudson kid will turn out to be a fantastic soccer player and the Beckham kid will look exactly like Goldie Hawn and they'll meet in their 20s and fall in love after a series of mishaps? (Neither kid has been given its obligatory weird celebrity name yet, by the way! The Beckhams are world-champion weird kid-namers, but Hudson's other son is called "Ryder" so she could be a dark horse here.) [AP, People]

Lauri Apple · 07/10/11 01:43PM

For the past 11 years, Paul Harman has happily hummed around his council flat without incident. Recently, however, a new neighbor moved into his South London building and complained to the council that Harman hums too much. Now he faces eviction.

This is What a Real Jail Escape Looks Like

Max Read · 07/10/11 01:09PM

If you ever need to escape from the Walker County Jail in Huntsville, Texas, this is the video you want to watch. Trent Archie managed to fight his way out—his fellow inmate, Davis McLeskey, wasn't quite so lucky—by telling officers he needed to use the phone and then attacking an officer and forcing his way through the door. (Archie's since been re-arrested.) It's a bit less involved than Prison Break, but at least it doesn't take 22 goddamn episodes. [ABC]

Lauri Apple · 07/10/11 11:55AM

Recently a diver took pictures of a blackspot tuskfish who was smacking a clam off a rock to get at the delicious food inside. As Science reports, the fish "was clearly quite skilled at its task" and "landing absolutely pinpoint blows."

Tim Pawlenty Thinks Scientists are 'in Dispute' About Homosexuality

Max Read · 07/10/11 11:45AM

Scientists—like, actual scientists, with real degrees and a belief in the scientific method—agree that people do not choose their sexual orientation. Someone should tell Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty! Because he seems to think that "the science in that regard is in dispute."
