Sex Scandalized Airline Cancels Ill-Timed Ad Campaign

Jeff Neumann · 08/15/11 07:25AM

Hong Kong-basd airline Cathay Pacific on Friday said that two of its employees who were "shown in compromising situations" — read: having fun with a camera in the cockpit — were "no longer employees of the company." Well, fair enough. If you take oral sex pics in your place of work and they somehow leak (not judging!), you sort of deserve to be let go if you're in the service industry. But Cathay Pacific didn't stop there. As part of the airline's attempt to clean up its stained image, an advertisement campaign called "People and Service" was cancelled yesterday. What's so bad about that? Oh, the slogan, which claims that Cathay Pacific is "the team who go the extra mile to make you feel special." Yeah, good call canceling that one.

Homeless Man Walks Past Ann Curry's House

Jeff Neumann · 08/15/11 06:23AM

You know it's mid-August when a man walking past Ann Curry's empty Upper West Side townhouse is newsworthy. That, or we're talking about the New York Post. On Saturday, the Post reported that a "hobo" had been squatting in Curry's abandoned $2.9 million townhouse for about a year until police removed him from the building. As the "bum" explained to the paper, "I'm not a drug addict; I just don't have a place to sleep." Police took the man to a homeless shelter without incident.

Hosni Mubarak Goes for a Sporty Bedridden Look

Jeff Neumann · 08/15/11 05:03AM

Whereas the opening day of the Mubaraks' trial on August 3rd was all about Hosni picking his nose and the general sense of shock felt by Egyptians who watched their longtime leader sit in a cage, today was all about appearances. Again, Hosni's conveniently devout sons Alaa and Gamal clutched Qurans. But this time around, Hosni traded in his prison pajamas for what looked to be a zip up track suit. He also looked like he's visited a taxidermist.

The Stupidest 15 Seconds of Tonight's Keeping Up With the Kardashians

Matt Cherette · 08/15/11 02:04AM

Because nobody should be forced to endure an entire 30 minutes of America's most overexposed family every Sunday night, I'll be watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians for you and reporting back with a clip of each episode's most cringeworthy 15 or so seconds.

The Week in Celebrity Snapshots

Matt Cherette · 08/14/11 11:31PM

Every day, celebrities across the world are followed and photographed by the omnipresent paparazzi, often to entertaining results. Here are some of the more amusing shots from the past week.

The Plot to Grow Hitler's Breasts

Seth Abramovitch · 08/14/11 10:07PM

Not since we learned of the Nazis' failed attempts to create a canine überbreed capable of reading, writing and solving complex math equations has a tale of WWII crackpot science been so utterly delightful (if suspect): The Daily Mail has a story of a British plan to "lace Adolf Hitler's food with female sex hormones to curb his aggressive impulses" — thereby turning "Herr Hitler into Her Hitler," they write. (I applaud their restraint in not going for the easy "Mein Kramps" joke.)

Here Is Some Relaxing Footage of a Bat on an Airplane

Seth Abramovitch · 08/14/11 09:14PM

Hello, everyone! I hope you had a relaxing weekend and are fully recharged for the work week ahead. In the chance that you still have a few residual kinks left, however, please now enjoy this footage of a bat flapping around the cabin of a Madison to Atlanta Delta flight, filmed shortly after takeoff at 6:45 a.m. on August 5. Passengers were able to trap it in the bathroom until the plane could turn back around and land, but it unfortunately escaped before animal control could test it for rabies and/or vampire rabies. Enjoy! (And please, no Samuel Jackson quotes — they just detract from the zen. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.) [via io9]

Anonymous Hacks BART Website, Leaks User Info and Passwords

Seth Abramovitch · 08/14/11 08:32PM

It's been a busy weekend for the hacking collective known as Anonymous. Their Operation Fullerton may not have panned out, but Project BARTway was a rousing success. (If you measure success in Thousands of Civilians' Personal Information Being Compromised in the Name of Free Speech.) As they had warned, Anonymous has infiltrated Bay Area Rapid Transit System on Sunday, unfurling their pirate flag logo on the homepage of myBART.com — a promotional website — and, more disconcertingly, releasing the personal information of thousands of myBART.com users.

Dog Theft Is Increasing

Lauri Apple · 08/14/11 05:16PM

So now the American Kennel Club's saying that dog theft's up by 32 percent this year. Apparently their special database recording animal thefts has recorded 224 reports since January 1. That's almost as many thefts recorded in all of 2010 (255, if you're keeping score).

Norway Shooter Recreates Massacre for Authorities

Max Read · 08/14/11 04:55PM

Well, how's this for creepy? Admitted terrorist Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a simultaneous bombing and spree shooting, took Norwegian authorities on a tour of Utoya—the island on which he shot 69 people to death and injured dozens more.

Blimp Ends Up in 94-Year-Old's Backyard

Max Read · 08/14/11 03:19PM

Lillian Bernhagen, a 94-year-old Ohio woman, was probably surprised when police knocked on her door on Sunday morning. But they weren't after her—just after the 128-foot-blimp in her backyard.

Say Hello to Rick Perry's New Campaign Bus

Lauri Apple · 08/14/11 02:44PM

Joining the Tour de Grift Express, the Buss de Bachmann, and all the other Republican buses burning up fuel on America's highways this summer (don't worry, it's probably all biodiesel) is this sleek new model just unveiled by the Rick Perry campaign in Iowa. Grand!
