Shocker: Poor Schools Get Less Money

Hamilton Nolan · 12/01/11 03:10PM

If you've ever consulted your own common sense, one of the things it probably told you was, "I bet that shitty schools in poor neighborhoods get less money spent on them, than schools in richer neighborhoods." At long last, the US Education Department has done a real live study on this topic. The shocking results:

Good Riddance, Movember

Brian Moylan's Mustache · 12/01/11 02:55PM

Today is December 1. Do you know what that means? Oh, yeah World AIDS Day. That's great, but that's not what makes today awesome. Today marks the end of Movember, when all the jerks and mustache-come-latelys shave their upper lips. Thank the mustache gods.

How Apple Is Burying Its Scrooge Image

Ryan Tate · 12/01/11 02:45PM

There is pain and turmoil in Steve Jobs's death, but for the departed tech executive's company Apple, real opportunity, too. That's why, near the height of the holiday shopping season, Apple is giving precious space on its homepage and in its stores to a charity promotion. It's the sort of philanthropic gesture Jobs made a point of avoiding.

Herman Cain Ad Boasts of Lie Detector Test That He Didn't Take

Jim Newell · 12/01/11 02:20PM

Give it up for Americans for Herman Cain, the SuperPAC that appears to be competing with the Cain campaign proper to determine which makes the funniest ads. This one here, it's a real treat. It implies that Herman Cain passed a lie detector test, thus conclusively revealing the "truth" about his various sexual harassment allegations. Clever move, Super PAC! But one should note that Herman Cain has not actually taken a lie detector test.

Bono Cannot Stop Writing About Himself

Hamilton Nolan · 12/01/11 01:30PM

Bono. This guy. The guy from U2. But you probably know him for being the world's all-around best human. He's not just some rock star that groupies want to bang; he's some rock star who's always writing op-eds about Serious World Issues, which makes an entirely new set of groupies want to bang him.

Republicans' Top Message Man Has a Plan to Counter 'Occupy Wall Street'

Jim Newell · 12/01/11 01:10PM

Ubiquitous GOP "message guru" Frank Luntz is the guy who teaches Republicans how to kill things. When Democrats introduce a bill and Republicans decide that they'd like to kill it, for sport, they ask Luntz to come up with a couple of phrases to reiterate hundreds of times a day, so as to terrify the American people.

Jihad Against White Coca-Cola Cans Succeeds

Maureen O'Connor · 12/01/11 12:30PM

Our long national nightmare of coke cans looking different than usual has ended: Coca Cola has announced that it will scrap this year's white holiday-designed cans, and return to "time-honored red" next week. Why? "Sacrilege."

Neil Patrick Harris Wants to Be Regis Philbin Real Bad

Brian Moylan · 12/01/11 12:18PM

In case you didn't think that gay jack-of-all-trade Neil Patrick Harris didn't want to fill the seat on Coffee Klatch: LIVE! vacated by Regis Philbin, he actually pretended to be Regis this morning while guest hosting with celebrity fag hag Kelly Ripa.

Get Unlonely This Holiday Season

Studio@Gawker · 12/01/11 11:59AM

It's December. The forced happiness of the holiday season is upon us, with all its unbearable mistletoe-dangling parties. If you're not in a boyfriend- or girlfriend-bubble, don't go on a fun strike and wallow away the Advent Calendar in your pajama jeans. Follow these holiday Dos and Don'ts to make your holiday season unlonely, inspired by the unbig smart car. (It's built for two people, after all.)

Mitt Romney Has Not Gotten Any Less Awkward Since 1994

Jim Newell · 12/01/11 11:50AM

Any day when even a single second of new footage of Mitt Romney trying to interact with human beings hits YouTube is going to be a good day, and here we've got four whole uncut minutes of it! This is quite a score, comedy-wise.

Man, Wikileaks' New Leak Sucks

Adrian Chen · 12/01/11 11:25AM

Julian Assange just unveiled Wikileaks' latest release, and it's embarrassing: A bunch of brochures and manuals they downloaded from public websites, and some stuff that the Wall Street Journal published last month.

Lindsay Lohan's New Sober Coach: Courtney Love

Maureen O'Connor · 12/01/11 11:08AM

Courtney Love scares Lindsay Lohan straight. Zoe Saldana gets "hot and heavy" with Bradley Cooper. A Kourtney Kardashian wedding is "imminent." Kristin Cavallari gets re-engaged. Do as Thursday gossip says, not as it did in the '90s.

Look, Greta Van Susteren Is Not a 'Real Journalist,' Okay?

Hamilton Nolan · 12/01/11 10:25AM

Rigidly visaged Fox News television presenter Greta Van Susteren has already established herself as the least journalistic "journalist" in all of this great land, due to her complete mystification as to the very concept of journalism. This is most clearly evidenced by the fact that she is close personal friends with newsworthy figures, yet continues to pretend that she is "covering" them as a "journalist," rather than "performing metaphorical fellatio upon them" like a "fanboy." Whether you think this is convenient or inconvenient is closely correlated with whether or not you think Fox News is a "good" news network.
