With just one day left in 2015, former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari has yet to make any public statements about her hopes and dreams for the new year. We can only assume that her overarching goal is the same as it was in 2006, when she told People magazine, “I would love to have a career like Cameron Diaz’s.”

Since the Middle Ages, human beings have purchased various goods—ranging from bare necessities to unimaginable luxuries—using money acquired from wage labor. We routinely report on how the past and present iterations of this system, commonly known as market capitalism, depend on the subjugation of the planet’s most powerless populations and the destruction of the earth’s most fragile ecosystems. We much less routinely acknowledge the fact that we buy stuff ourselves, and that we like a lot of the stuff we buy. KaloBios Inc., the biotech company that fired its CEO Martin Shkreli earlier this month after he was arrested for fraud, filed for bankruptcy today. That makes two former Shkreli companies that aren’t doing so hot: Turing Pharmaceuticals announced layoffs last week.
