Songs of the Day: Some With that Diwali Riddim
Rich Juzwiak · 05/25/12 02:55PMIt's the unofficial start of summer this weekend, and not much music (beyond Latin freestyle) scans "SUMMER" as explicitly as the spate of hits (and misses) from a few years ago featuring the pivoting, clap-happy Diwali Riddim. It's in Lumidee's "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)" (one in a multi-year line of ubiquitous summer songs by one-hit wonders that I include Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" in — even though she obviously was not a one-hit wonder, she felt like one when her debut single came out).

Leah Beckmann · 05/25/12 11:45AM
Pedro Hernandez, the man arrested and charged with the murder of Etan Patz, was taken to Bellevue Hospital this morning and placed on suicide watch. Hernandez, who has cancer, had been in police custody just over 24 hours when he told authorities he had gone off his anti-depressant medication and was thinking about killing himself. He was taken to Bellevue at 5:30am this morning.

Neetzan Zimmerman · 05/25/12 11:10AMThe Long, Sad Story of Etan Patz (UPDATE)
John Cook · 05/25/12 10:32AM
Today is the 33rd anniversary of the disappearance of Etan Patz, the six-year-old New Yorker whose abduction in 1979 helped usher in a new age of terror and suspicion for American parents. Though Etan was declared legally dead in 2001, his case has never been solved. Yesterday, after three decades of false leads and a menagerie of suspects, the NYPD announced that a New Jersey man named Pedro Hernandez had confessed to strangling Patz and dumping his body somewhere in Manhattan. It's unclear at this point whether Hernandez's confession will hold water, if he acted alone, or if he is just a confused publicity seeker. Here's a look back at the case.

Hackers Plan Huge Attack For 4PM Today, Stupidly Announce It To Everyone
Adrian Chen · 05/25/12 10:01AM
A general principle to keep in mind when dealing with hackers is: If a gang of hackers announces the exact date, time and targets of an upcoming hack, it is not going to happen. So we'd bet 800 bitcoins that this attack on "46 major companies around the world" planned for 4pm today by a hacking group associated with Anonymous is not going to come off.

Hamilton Nolan · 05/25/12 08:48AM
This week, the New Orleans Times-Picayune announced that it is cutting its print publication schedule back to three days a week and laying off staff in an effort to remain financially viable. It's a sad step for a storied and respected newspaper. It is also, on an industrywide scale, a completely expected evolution. Let's briefly review the recent past, and the future, of newspapers.
