Today is January 8th, the 30th birthday of Kim Jong-un, North Korea's most powerful basketball enthusiast. Happy birthday big guy! North Korean news blog NKNews.org has taken the opportunity to introduce us to some of the ways in which brave North Korean people have been mocking Kim Jong-un in days leading up to his birthday. Apparently they're not super enthralled with the festivities, which have included such delights as "Street-Cleaning for the Leader's Birthday." Also, "compulsory apple-picking days"—the North Korean equivalent of a Chuck E. Cheese party.

America's Rent Is Going Up

Hamilton Nolan · 01/08/13 10:12AM

If you're living somewhere nice right now, chances are that you're paying more than the quadruple-digit average national rent, and that your rent is going up, fast. If you have a reasonable, three-digit rent and a landlord who doesn't try to squeeze you dry with every lease renewal, chances are you live in a shithole. You just can't win in today's America.

Rich Juzwiak · 01/08/13 10:00AM

Come next week, we'll get to see with our own eyes if the pop-culture feud of 2012 is as fake as it seems when American Idol begins its 12th season featuring Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on its judging panel. But until then, we'll just have to take their word for it. Nicki has already weighed in, and Mariah got an extended chance to do so last night on Nightline when she sat down with the always daffy Barbara Walters.

Taylor Berman · 01/07/13 11:19PM

Hours after he was arrested for refusing to take off his shoes at a TSA checkpoint, Alex Jones lost his damn mind during an interview with Piers Morgan on Monday night. Chicago Lottery Winner Died From Cyanide Poisoning One Day After Collecting $1 Million Jackpot

Taylor Berman · 01/07/13 07:56PM

Last June, Urooj Khan, a 46-year-old who owned several dry cleaners in Chicago, won a cool million in the Illinois lottery. He reacted in an appropriate enough way, yelling "I hit a million, I hit a million!" repeatedly before leaving the 7-Eleven, only to return after a few moments to tip the store's clerk $100. Several weeks later, at a ceremony where he was presented with an oversized check, Khan said "Winning the lottery means everything to me." Khan added he had plans to donate some of the post-taxes sum of $425,000 to a local children's hospital and then invest the remaining cash into his business.

Does the Fact That No One Is Talking About the Naked Waitress at Roberta's Mean That Bushwick Is 'Over'?

Max Read · 01/07/13 06:30PM

Bushwick is "the coolest place on the planet," according to the Times, and yet no one seems to care about the naked woman waiting tables at its coolest restaurant — the sprawling, ramshackle pizza joint Roberta's — on Friday night. I was there and I didn't really care, though she wasn't serving our table, and we were in a kind of post-traumatic stress situation after the two-hour wait and the Venusian heat of the wood stove-heated tent out back and the woman who called my friend a "whore" in the aforementioned tent bar for trying to sit down at a table on which she (the woman) claimed to have dibs. And anyway we only caught the waitress, surrounded by customers taking photos, while walking out, stuffed with pizza and duck and pork, and when we asked we were told that Friday was her last day, and the nudity did seem to be a kind of farewell gesture; she, or someone, had written "PEACE OUT" on her back.
