There is currently a minor uproar over the revelation that various non-governmental groups sell early access— two seconds early—to their market-moving news releases to paying customers, who can then trade on that information before everyone else. This points to a larger problem: the entire institution of "high frequency trading" has no public benefit, and tons of risk.

Rupert Murdoch Is Divorcing Wendi Deng

Only two years after Wendi Deng leapt up to punch an activist smashing a pie into Rupert Murdoch during a parliamentary hearing, Murdoch has filed for divorce from Deng, his wife since 1999 and his third overall. Though the news may come as a surprise to some, those who have been paying attention have probably noticed that the couple have been drifting apart for some time now—and their 38-year age difference seems to be the least of their concerns.

Chemical Plant Explosion in Louisiana, Multiple Injuries Reported

An explosion at a chemical plant in Louisiana this morning has injured many—though no reports of fatalities as of yet. Hazmat units are attending to the accident at Williams Olefins Chemical Plant in Geismar, Louisiana. The plant churns out 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of propylene per year. The industrial area is a little over 50 miles northwest from New Orleans, 30 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.
