Philly Inquirer Editor Fired Same Day Paper Ties Ed Rendell to the Mob (Updated)
Hamilton Nolan · 10/07/13 01:23PM
This morning, Philadelphia Inquirer editor Bill Marimow was abruptly fired. The paper's publisher cited "philosophical differences" to explain the move. Also today, Philly.com ran a story about a book tying former Pennsylvania governor and current Inquirer owner-pal Ed Rendell to organized crime. Coincidence?
A Dazzling Math No One Can Taste: The Twitter Teachings of Jaden Smith
Caity Weaver · 10/07/13 01:00PM
In the year which we now represent as a grayish blue leaf shape meaning combination of hunger and embarrassment (stylized in the Western calendar as "2 0 0 6"), a tool was bestowed upon the people of Earth that would allow them to receive the one True and Perfect Holy Book, line by line, one transmission at a time. That tool was called "twɪt-UR." That book was called "The Book of Jaden."

Bill de Blasio Mourns Death of Very Racist Rabbi
J.K. Trotter · 10/07/13 11:02AM
Today Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel and controversial orthodox Jewish activist, died at the age of 93 in Jerusalem. As one of Israel’s most prominent religious figures, Yosef frequently ran into trouble for his avid racism. He once claimed, for example, that Hurricane Katrina was black people’s divine punishment for not studying the Torah. That didn’t stop Bill de Blasio, currently the front-runner in New York City’s mayoral race, from praising his legacy.

Edward Snowden, living in Russia, must eat. Here he is grocery shopping like a normal person. Strange, since his lawyer had told Fox News that he walks around in disguise, but it seems like he could actually wearing the very same blue shirt he appeared in in that youTube video. Not much of a disguise, unless it's an Edward Snowden costume.

On Sunday, at least 51 people were killed and more than 260 were injured in Egypt during clashes between protesters supportive of ousted Islamist President Morsi and backers of the Egyptian military. The protests, the deadliest since hundreds were killed on August 14, took place on an Egyptian national holiday honoring the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli War.
Bakken Boom: Where the Buffalo Are Furloughed

Oil wells and sheet-metal buildings are hideous things, but America the Beautiful resumes as soon as you get past the last grim RV park and last signs of our shoddy civilization. The easiest way to refresh the soul is to look on the map for a big chunk of green: a national park or preserve or forest, or in the case of the Bakken, the Little Missouri National Grassland.

Hamilton Nolan · 10/07/13 09:41AM
In an interview this past weekend, New York Times editor Jill Abramson decried THE POLITICO-style coverage of politics, in which "the political maneuvering becomes the dominant thread and what is lost is what effect it actually has on people." In a story yesterday about the US commando raids in Libya, her own paper did just that. (Then made it disappear.)
