When it comes to activities performed in the free world, New Wave artist Neil Young has been an early and enthusiastic advocate of rockin’. Unless, it now seems, the rockin’ is performed by melted Creamsicle/presidential candidate Donald Trump.

According to Variety, Young has objected to the use of his 1989 pro-rockin’ anthem at Trump’s campaign announcement this morning.

“Donald Trump was not authorized to use ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’ in his presidential candidacy announcement,” said Young’s manager in a statement. “Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States Of America.”

Trump representatives, however, claim the billionaire rotting pumpkin’s rockin’ was fully sanctioned.

“Through a license agreement with ASCAP, Mr. Trump’s campaign paid for and obtained the legal right to use Neil Young’s recording of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ at today’s event,” said a Trump campaign spokesperson. “Mr. Trump is a huge fan of Neil Young and his music and will continue to be regardless of Neil’s political views.”

Well, good. As long as Trump can still enjoy lyrics like, “He’s just a rich old man / He never cared for anyone / He likes to count his possessions / He’s been a miser from penny one,” I guess everything’s okay.
