Louie the Clown Spent 10 Creepy Years in a Sex Offender's House
Louie, the famed organ-playing clown from Wichita's now defunct Joyland Amusement Park has returned after missing for 10 years. He was found in the home of Damian Mayes, a former employee of the park who used to repair Louie's organ—and a convicted sex offender. "It is a great feeling we finally have found it (Louie)," Margaret Nelson Spear, one of Joyland's former owners, told the Wichita Eagle. "…It is a big relief. We are pleased."
Mayes, 39, is currently in prison for his 2010 conviction for aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated criminal sodomy. According to WDAF, Louie disappeared in 2005 or 2006, but wasn't officially reported missing until 2010.
Greg Kite, president of the Historic Preservation Alliance of Wichita and Sedgwick County, told the Eagle that police were able to find Louie in Mayes' home after a relative posted about the clown on Facebook.
"Like Lazarus rising from the dead, we have Louie the Clown recovered," Kite told the paper. "We have been working on this for months, accumulating information, photographs and statements."
Wichita Police Department Det. Matt Lang told KWCH that Mayes and others could face felony theft charges—Louis is apparently valued at $10,000.
