Elizabeth Cheney, non-gay daughter of the former VP, tried to run for Senate from Wyoming and ended up pissing off her family. She also pissed off some of Wyoming's best-loved pols, including the family friend who she's trying to unseat. All of which would have been fine, but it turned out she pissed off voters, too.

CNN reported late Sunday night that Cheney was dropping her bid to challenge Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wy.) in the state's Republican Senate primary this year. In a release early this morning, Cheney said she was quitting because of "serious health issues" in the family, though she refused to say anything more about that in an email to the New York Times.

On one hand, this is no big surprise. Cheney carpetbagged her way to the ancestral family home from her own native habitat in Washington, threw her lesbian sister under the bus for political gain, and never polled particularly well against a popular incumbent. Nonpartisan pollsters ignored the primary; a poll conducted in November by a conservative super PAC had Cheney down by 53 points, or 2 more percentage points than Barack Obama earned, total, in the 2012 election.

On the other hand, it's kinda weird to see any of the Cheneys admitting defeat after they single-mindedly bullshitted and blundered their way into a costly losing battle. But Liz is the one with a working heart.
