Summer has barely started, and already people are finding terrifying beasts in the waters surrounding New York City. Just last weekend, a group of fishermen caught a baby great white shark off the coast of Rockaway Beach, Queens.

According to Steve Fernandez, who hauled the great white in along with a few markedly less culturally relevant blue sharks, there is in fact no magic fence keeping our worst nightmares from manifesting themselves close to the beach. From DNAinfo:

Steve Fernandez, 29, and his friends were on the water Sunday when they spotted a great white toward the rear of the boat that was an estimated 10-feet long.

"I've seen them off shore, never really this close," said Fernandez, who works in the insurance industry. "There's no magical fence that keeps them off the beach. They swim wherever they want to go."

The naive fishers, rather than dispose of the scourge before it can terrorize more innocent New Yorkers, released it back into the water, per National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration guidelines. Don't they know what happens next?
