An FDNY firefighter is being charged with grand larceny and burglary by police after making fake 911 calls and then robbing firehouses after firefighters had gone off to respond to the fake emergencies.

Joseph Keene made three fraudulent 911 calls which alerted firefighters to emergencies that weren't actually happening. Once the firefighters left their firehouses, Keene stole around $1,900 from other FDNY employees while sneaking around unoccupied firehouses in Queens and Staten Island.

"For anybody to call in a fake 911 call when the police department, the fire department, EMS have so much to do is outrageous," said Rose Gill Hearn, commissioner for New York City's Department of Investigation, which caught Keene. "For it to be a firefighter doing it is beyond the pale of anything we have seen."

Keene reported the (non-existent) smell of gas in two instances, and in another call alerted authorities to a sparking transformer. Keene has admitted he stole the money and made the calls, and that he's a huge jerk.
