Eric Trump: Really When You Think About It Waterboarding Is Just Like Hazing
In an appearance on Greta Van Susteren’s “On the Record” Monday, Donald Trump’s second son backed up his father’s proposal to ramp back up the United States’ practice of torture in the so-called War on Terror.
“If I have it to do and if it’s up to me, I would absolutely bring back waterboarding,” the Republican frontrunner said on “This Week with George Stephanopouloson” Sunday. “And if it’s going to be tougher than waterboarding, I would bring that back, too.” (Elsewhere: “Waterboarding is peanuts.”)
Van Susteren asked Eric to clarify his father’s comments on Monday. “You see these terrorists that are flying planes into buildings, right?” he replied. “You see our cities getting shot up in California. You see Paris getting shot up. And then somebody complains when a terrorist gets waterboarded, which quite frankly is no different than what happens on college campuses and frat houses every day.”
This, of course, paints a startling picture of campus life—one that most colleges and fraternities would no doubt reject categorically—and especially the (sometimes mysterious) goings-on inside fraternity houses. But maybe Eric Trump knows something we don’t? Last year, a fraternity at the University of Houston was rumored to have been suspended for waterboarding its pledges with alcohol. In 2012, the New York Times reported that a number of fraternity pledges were subjected to waterboarding (and other, similar practices) at Binghamton University. Then again, what would Eric Trump know about it? He went to Georgetown, where Greek life has been limited until recently.
Anyway! “The man would keep this country safe,” Eric said. “There is no question about it.”
