Eat More Insects, United Nations Tells a Hungry Planet
A new UN report finds that insects, our six-legged friends, could help solve world hunger — if only we got over ourselves and started eating them.
Right now, over 2 billion of the world's population include insects in their diet. Insect farming could be "one of the many ways to address food and feed security".
The report states that, "Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly, and they have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint." Basically, we can save the environment and gorge ourselves. We just have to be eating bugs.
The authors point out that, nutritionally, you can get just as much protein from a meal of crickets then a meal of meat. Mmmm, crickets. Gimme a bowl full o' that!
Still, this food revolution hinges on our ability to stop eating our beloved ammonia-based slime and instead embrace our beautiful pal, the caterpillar.
The report adds that "consumer disgust" remains a major hurdle to global entomophagy.
