Ah, jokes. They are tricky to master, no? Sometimes they land, sometimes they fall flat. Sometimes you make a horrendous joke using a slur about a person born to a noncitizen mother in a country with birthright citizenship, and the audience just doesn’t get it!

Republican presidential candidate and clump of mashed-up candy corn Donald Trump made one of these jokes on Saturday, after announcing that he had settled a $500 million lawsuit over Univision dropping the Miss Universe pageant in the wake of another “joke” Trump made about Mexicans being rapists.

While the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, Trump did take to Twitter to spew forth his hope to be interviewed by a “star anchor” from Univision, likely referencing Jorge Ramos, with whom Trump has sparred in the past. In doing so, Trump inserted what seems to be a sly reference to anchor-babies.

Ramos, who was born in Mexico City, has not commented on the tweet, but did retweet a story about Trump’s settlement. It’s worth pointing out, however, that Ramos does not even fit the description for the term “anchor baby” when it comes to the U.S., because he was born outside the country. Trump, however, whose mother was born in Scotland and held British citizenship, fits the descriptor “anchor baby” much better than Ramos does.
