In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Wednesday, Donald Trump broadened his attempts to undermine Michelle Fields’ accusations against Corey Lewandowski, criticizing the police department filed battery charges against his campaign manager: “They’re destroying that man over nothing.”

Lewandowski turned himself in to police in Jupiter on Tuesday evening. Chief Frank Kitzerow described it as “a very straightforward procedure,” the Palm Beach Post reports. He also said that the department had no contact with Trump during their investigation of the incident.

“Mr. Lewandowski is absolutely innocent of this charge. He will enter a plea of not guilty and looks forward to his day in court. He is completely confident that he will be exonerated,” Trump said through a spokesperson on Tuesday.

Trump’s comments Wednesday are part of an ever-expanding and contracting campaign to distract and diminish from what actually happened: His campaign manager grabbed a female reporter and pulled her away so roughly that she was left bruised.

“What they’ve done is, I think, outrageous. They’re destroying a very good person,” he told Matthews, who’d raised the point that the incident couldn’t have been very minor if the Jupiter PD thought it was worth investigating. “Maybe I should press charges against her!”

It is surprising to hear the GOP frontrunner issue such a blatant criticism of law enforcement, but then again this primary season has been somewhat unpredictable.
