DOMA's Death Paves Way for Kristen Bell to Gay Marry Dax Shepard
Forget gays getting married — the Supreme Court's decision to strike down DOMA finally allows Veronica Mars star and sloth aficionado Kristen Bell to tie the knot with long-time fiance/professional punker Dax Shepard.
Though the two have been technically engaged since 2009 and even share a baby girl named Lincoln together, Bell told The Advocate last year that she doesn't plan on marrying Shepard until the same rights are extended to the LGBT community.
"The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends," she told the publication. "Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period."
She reiterated her stance a few months later, telling CNN's Piers Morgan it didn't feel right asking "half of our friends" to "come celebrate a right they don't have."
"That's just tacky!" Bell added.
With DOMA now dead, the couple took to their respective Twitter feeds to announce plans to get gay married:
.@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove”
DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let's bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!
Congrats to the happy couple. And gays too, I guess.
