North Korea announced on Friday that it has detained an American citizen who entered the country in April on a tourist visa.

Jeffrey Edward Fowle was detained sometime in May after leaving a Bible in a hotel room, according to a report from Japanese news agency Kyodo.

That report seems to match up with the brief press release issued on Friday by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency. "[Fowle] perpetrated activities that violated the laws of our republic, which did not fit his stated purpose of visiting our republic as a tourist. Our related agency has detained him and is investigating him."

Fowle's arrest brings the number of American citizens being held in North Korea to three. Kenneth Bae, a missionary, was arrested in November 2012 on charges of perpetrating "hostile acts" against the country and was later sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Matthew Todd Miller was detained on April 10, reportedly after tearing up his visa and demanding asylum.
