Shakira Had a Baby (and Also a Last Name—Who Knew?)
Did you know that Shakira has a last name? And also a baby boy, now; congratulations Shakira.
The singer announced the birth of her first child, a son named Milan Piqué Mebarak, via an extremely low-key press release posted to her website. Like, maybe a little too low-key. One of her PR people forwarded a copy of the press release to Gawker, and I thought that someone in our building had had a baby and was emailing everyone about it for some reason.
Here it is:
Subject: Birth Announcement
We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born January 22nd at 9:36pm, in Barcelona, Spain.
The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.
Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.
The hospital confirmed that the couple's first child weighed approximately 6lbs. 6 ounces, and that both mother and child are in excellent health.
You're pretty famous, Shakira. Don't be afraid to go big with your childbirth announcements. Don't be afraid to title the email "SHAKIRA HAD A BABY." Don't be afraid to include a link to one of your classic music videos so that I can celebrate your new life through music.
The baby's father is Spanish soccer player waka waka eh eh Gerard Piqué.
