On Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department released the Notorious B.I.G.'s autopsy report, more than 15 years after the rapper's murder. But, in keeping with their thus far stellar work on the case, they failed to first notify Biggie's family. Now, of course, they've apologized for the incident, blaming an administrative mistake.

"Due to an administrative error, the autopsy report was released prematurely. Robbery-Homicide Division detectives had intended to notify Mr. Wallace's family prior to releasing the report," the LAPD said in a statement.

"Our detectives personally spoke with the Wallace family [Friday] night, and apologized for not notifying them prior to the release" said Capt. Billy Hayes, who heads the Robbery-Homicide Division, which is investigating the killing. "Obviously this has been a challenging case for us to solve. We hope that witnesses or other people with information will come forward and give us the clues we need to solve this case."

The 23-page autopsy report was released in hopes that it might turn up new leads. According to the document, Biggie Smalls was killed by a "shot that entered his right hip before slicing through his colon, liver, heart and part of his lung before wedging in his left shoulder area." A second bullet hit him in the left forearm and entered his wrist, a third shot struck his back and exited through his shoulder and a fourth hit his left leg. Examiners weren't able to determine the order of the shots.

The case is famously cold, but that hasn't stopped an abundance of conspiracy theories from forming. Was Suge Knight responsible? Or was it a corrupt cop? Or was the shooter an "African-American man wearing a suit and a bow tie"? Or all three? Could be all three.

Regardless, based on the LAPD's inability to solve the murder in a decade and a half, it seems unlikely the case will put to rest anytime soon/ever.
