San Francisco mayor Edwin Lee became the latest big city mayor to make empty threats at Chick-fil-A. First it was Boston mayor Thomas Menino, who just today toned down his rhetoric because he realized it was, you know, illegal and impossible to actually ban Chick-fil-a from Boston. Then it was Chicago alderman Joe Moreno who said: "Because of this man's ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A's permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward." Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel had his back, telling reporters that opening a Chick-fil-A in Chicago, "would be a bad investment, since it would be empty."

Now it's San Francisco's turn. Mayor Lee tweeted:

And:

Boycotting Chick-fil-A because they have bigoted, backwards ownership is good and important and all that. But at this point these mayoral statements have become blatant political posturing because, again, these mayors can't actually do anything to stop moral simpletons like Dan Cathy from bringing his (regretfully) delicious sandwiches to their cities.

And to make matters worse, it gives semi-legitimate talking points to blathering fools like Michelle Malkin. Says the LA Times:

Conservative commentator Michelle Malkin blogged that Menino's "beef with the beloved chicken sandwich supplier is as full of holes as Chick-fil-A's trademark waffle fries."

"When an elected public official wields the club of government against a Christian business in the name of 'tolerance,' it's not harmless kid stuff," Malkin wrote. "It's chilling."

Hyperbolic and shrill, as always, but damnit if she doesn't sort of have a point, right?
