Who Shot This Teen Lesbian Couple in Portland, Texas? [UPDATE]
18-year-old Mary Christine Chapa of Portland, Texas, is in serious but stable condition after an unknown assailant shot her in the head last Saturday around Midnight.
Her girlfriend, 19-year-old Mollie Judith Olgin, was also shot at close range. She did not survive.
They were found lying in knee-deep grass at Violet Andrews Park. Olgin was pronounced dead at scene; Chapa was rushed to the hospital where she is currently recovering.
The couple had reportedly been dating for five months prior to the night of the shooting.
Police have yet to determine a motive for the crime, but say they are looking at the possibility that Olgin and Chapa's relationship played a role. "This particular case, it does have some of the earmarks of a targeted attack," Chief Randy Wright told KZTV.
Investigators haven't been able to turn up any meaningful clues so far as to the identity of the suspect. It is believed that the attacker led the women down to the grass by way of a trail before shooting them with a large caliber handgun. "It's marshy down there, and the tall grass didn't allow any identifiable footprints," said Wright.
Additionally, a witness reported seeing a dark-colored vehcile leave the scene of the crime.
Authorities hope Chapa will be able to shed more light on the matter. "She is able to communicate," Wright told the Corpus Christi Caller. "But we have not yet been able to talk with her."
UPDATE: A reader sends in this correction: "Mary Chapa is from Sinton and Mollie [Olgin] is from Ingleside but living in Corpus Christi."
