'Sister Wives' Stars Will Not Be Prosecuted for the Bigamy They Are So Blatantly Practicing
Viewers of TLC's Sister Wives have just been robbed of a very juicy plotline: it was announced Thursday that Kody Brown and his four wives (listed in order of greatness: Meri, Christine, Janelle, and Robyn) won't be prosecuted for bigamy.
The Browns moved their 16-child family from Lehi, Utah to wholesome Las Vegas, Nevada in early 2011, after Utah authorities launched a bigamy investigation against them.
While Kody Brown is legally married only to Meri (the other three women he identifies as "spiritual wives"), it is illegal under Utah law for a married person to purport to marry or cohabit with another person.
In response to the investigation, the Browns sued Utah county, claiming Utah's bigamy statute violated their constitutional rights to due process, equal protection, free exercise of religion, free speech, freedom of association, and freedom to provide fodder for compelling television marathons.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman is seeking to have that lawsuit dismissed now that he has closed the case against the Browns.
He noted in his Thursday motion that his office has now adopted the state policy of not pursuing bigamy cases unless there is evidence of a victim or fraud.
Looks like the family will just have to plan another disastrous camping expedition (Remember that? Such a great episode. So many teen ‘tudes.) if they want something interesting to happen on camera.
