So Much For Neutrality: Michele Bachmann Is Officially a Citizen of Switzerland
Michele Bachmann running for office in Switzerland? It's not as far-fetched as it seems.
According to local reports, the Minnesota Republican is eligible to run for Swiss office now that she's officially a citizen of that country.
Bachmann's husband, Marcus, recently took advantage of his right to request citizenship as the offspring of Swiss parents. Swiss law grants Mr. Bachmann's spouse and children automatic citizenship.
"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent, so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," said a Bachmann spokesperson. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."
Rep. Bachmann revealed the news to a Swiss TV crew while she was showing a group of Swiss parliamentarians around DC. When the interviewer inquired about the now-real possibility that she would run for office in Switzerland, Bachmann responded that she would face "very stiff" competition from the parliamentarians accompanying her, "because they are very good."
Asked about her feelings toward the country itself, Bachmann said it was "tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland."
