In response to the brouhaha that ensued following Simpsons creator Matt Groening's "revelation" that Springfield is "located" in his home state of Oregon, tonight's episode featured a chalkboard gag which aims to re-shroud the town's coordinates in mystery.

"The true location of Springfield is in any state but yours," writes Bart on the chalkboard during the title sequence.

In a recent Smithsonian interview, Groening said he named The Simpsons' setting after Springfield, Oregon. "The only reason," he explained, "is that when I was a kid, the TV show "Father Knows Best" took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown."
