Seventeen New Yorkers Will Win a Paltry $250,000
Sorry, New York: none of you won the $640 jackpot. However, 10 New York City tickets — and 7 more in the state — are second-place winners. That prize is $250,000, which is still a lot of money, even if it doesn't look very impressive next to the biggest lottery prize in history.
Americans spent a total of $1.5 billion in lottery tickets this week, and New York accounted for a significant chunk of that.
New Yorkers snatched up tickets at a furious pace Friday, with more than a million sold each hour in the Empire State alone. Many stores stayed open late to sell additional tickets before the late-night drawing.
Incidentally, there are stories like this all over — a $250,000 winner in Rhode Island, five $250,000 winners in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the identities of the three biggest winners remain unknown.
