Maryland, the U.S. state with the most bonkers flag, could become the eighth one to approve same-sex marriage, after its Senate voted today to approve the measure.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has pledged to sign the bill into law, and is expected to do so some time this week.

While today's vote took place in the Senate, the L.A. Times features a sweet anecdote from House of Delegates Republican Wade Katch discussing the bit of happenstance that, he claims, caused him to revise his stance on gay marriage at the House vote earlier this week.

In an effort to get the bill onto the House floor, a special joint committee was formed and legislators were left scrambling for seats. Kach, who had previously backed attempts to define marriage as between one man and one woman, found a space right next to the witness table.

"I saw with so many of the gay couples, they were so devoted to one another. I saw so much love," he said. "When this hearing was over, I was a changed person in regard to this issue. I felt that I understood what same sex couples were looking for."

Instead of just having a crab cake and chilling out, which is what they should do, opponents are expected to take the issue to voter referendum this fall.
