Women Can Have a Job or Love, But Not Both
Men do recessions like, "Aww shit, it's a recession up in here, nothing but crappy jobs out there, guess I'll just keep working this crappy job I have, nothing else to do, stone cold watching some football and drinking brews with the fellas, because my life is a beer commercial." But women do recessions like, "Considering these dead end prospects in the current job market, I shall instead return to school to further my education and enhance my employment prospects for the future." Ladies are crazy!
Workers are dropping out of the labor force in droves, and they are mostly women. In fact, many are young women. But they are not dropping out forever; instead, these young women seem to be postponing their working lives to get more education. There are now - for the first time in three decades - more young women in school than in the work force.
Women be schooling! [Pause for laughter.] Perhaps women are leaving the work force because they still earn less than men for the same jobs and their jobs are disappearing at a far higher rate, meaning that they must have a higher education level than men if they ever hope to achieve economic parity? Which, ironically, only isolates them further from the majority of men in the dating pool, leaving them to fight over the relatively scarce (and concomitantly self-entitled) educated men of their age, or to settle for some dude who's all, "Hey babe, heading off to work and then I'm gonna watch the game with the fellas and slap hands," and she's all "But remember we were going to go see the Diego Rivera exhibit at the Met?" and he's all, "Oh, I forgot, but whatever, I'm not into all that fancy 'art' crap you learned about in college," and she's all, "Honey, you might like it if you gave it a try," and he's all "I don't have time for this crap, I have to pick up a case of Bud Light to be prepared for the football game I will be watching on television with the fellas as we slap hands, before I return home to spout drunken uneducated raves about the hometown team as you sit by, bored, wistfully wondering just how your life turned out this way, when you did everything 'the right way.'"
I guess the takeaway is I can't get you a job but I do have a college degree, when are we going out? Women!
