Libyans Capture, Manage Not to Kill Saif Gaddafi
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya's late dictator, was captured by forces of the country's interim government as two aides attempted to smuggle him into Niger. And look at that! He managed not to get shot.
That's him above, throwing signs at the camera. Seems like the National Transitional Council learned its lesson from the outcry over soldiers' treatment of his dad—who was likely brutalized and executed after being captured by rebel forces a few weeks ago:
NTC fighter Meftah Ahmad Othman told Al Arabiya from the coastal city of Sirte that Seif al-Islam was captured in a dawn ambush carried out by "Khaled Bin al-Walid" fighters who are part of "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq" brigade.
Ahmad Othman added that Seif al-Islam was flown to Zintan and that his capture was not announced until his detention site was fully secured.
The NTC has apparently confirmed the capture to the International Criminal Court, which is sending its prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo to Libya to figure out how to try him.
Saif, the Gaddafi heir apparent, was long thought to be the best hope for a not-completely-fucked-up-and-autocratic Libya (he attended the London School of Economics, and like most modern western students, plagiarized his thesis). That hope went out the window as Saif enthusiastically signed on to his dad's brutal crackdowns over the last year. Basically the best thing we can say about this guy is that he isn't as much of a shithead as his siblings.
