Legendary Lawrence of Arabia actor Omar Sharif slapped a fan at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in Qatar. (Wouldn't exporting a festival named after a neighborhood sort of defeat the purpose?) Sharif is posing for pictures when the woman steps up to have her picture taken with him, at which point the 79-year-old slaps her and shouts:

My dear! I told you I'd get to you afterwards! I just said that and you're standing here. Put something in your brain!

A reporter present tweeted:

Omar Sharif just hit a woman. Very stupidly, in front of a camera. #dohafilmfestival

Whoever it was deleted it before I saw it, but based on retweets, it seems like it was BBC reporter Emma Cook, who spent the rest of the day walking back her descriptions of Sharif:

Omar Sharif was brushing away a woman who was trying to take a photograph. Unintentional contact, an accident. She was smiling afterwards.

it was pretty grumpy but accidental - and the thing is, she was smiling after so she wasn't upset

Regardless of what happened in Doha, Sharif's twilight years have been pretty violent: In 2003 he was convicted for headbutting a Parisian cop, and in 2008 he pleaded "no contest" to the misdemeanor battery of a Beverly Hills parking attendant. Then again, famed scholar Edward Said once said Sharif bullied him as a schoolboy. [TMZ]
