This particular class of legislators is, we can all agree, an exceptionally stupid group of people. But they are more than just stupid! They are also widely hated: A new poll has congress' disapproval rating at 82 percent—the lowest since the poll was first taken in 1977.

Yes, a new New York Times/CBS News Poll finds that 82 percent of people in the country think congress sucks. That's more people than even know what a congress is, or does! And it's one particular group of jerks that came out especially bad:

Republicans in Congress shoulder more of the blame for the difficulties in reaching a debt-ceiling agreement than President Obama and the Democrats, the poll found.

The Republicans compromised too little, a majority of those polled said. All told, 72 percent disapproved of the way Republicans in Congress handled the negotiations, while 66 percent disapproved of the way Democrats in Congress handled negotiations.

The public's opinion of the Tea Party movement has soured in the wake of the debt-ceiling debate. The Tea Party is now viewed unfavorably by 40 percent of the public and favorably by just 20 percent, according to the poll.

So! People seem to have figured out that "the Tea Party movement" is really just "the same reactionary crazies we voted out last time, but worse." (Took you long enough, Average Voter!) President Obama's approval rating, meanwhile, held steady at 48 percent. Americans also trust him more on the economy than congressional Republicans by 14-point margin.
