This 15-Year-Old Sold His Startup, So Why Can't You?
There are really no excuses for not cashing out on the tech bubble. A guy with grilled cheese sandwich did it. An app nobody uses did it. And now a 15-year-old hacker wunderkind has followed suit.
Daniil Kulchenko's story is awesome and, for those of us with less hustle and talent, simultaneously depressing. In January, Kulchenko launched an app hosting site called Phenona, which lets programmers quickly deploy web applications written in Perl. Five months later, Kulchenko sold his site to ActiveState, a Canadian maker of programming tools founded when Kulchenko was a year old.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but it was important enough for ActiveState to issue a press release calling it "a key part of our cloud strategy." Kulchenko, who has been programming since he was 6, plans to go to college and study computer science, "because a lot of workplaces today won't even look at you if you don't have a degree," he says.
