Newt Gingrich still had some presidential campaign staffers after 16 of his top aides quit en masse a couple of weeks ago. It only takes a few, right? Perhaps. But his top campaign finance advisers just quit too, so he really should end his campaign and take whatever few dollars remain to pay himself a PAC salary for a few months.

The AP reports that "Newt Gingrich's top two fundraising advisers resigned on Tuesday, and officials said the Republican candidate's hobbling presidential campaign carried more than $1 million in debt." And certain "people familiar with the campaign" — don't you love it when amoral Republican operatives wage anonymous intra-party slapfests? — describe Gingrich's balance sheet as a "dire financial situation." Let's illustrate the Gingrich campaign's financial problems a bit more clearly, with an equation:

(Being over $1 million in debt) + (taking on more debt to keep running a presidential campaign) + (no one ever wanting to give him money again) = being well over $1 million in debt, forever

Most of Gingrich's scheduled events this week are within driving distance of his Washington- and Georgia-area homes.
