Chinese Teen Allegedly Sells His Kidney For an iPad
The Telegraph reports on a teenager in China who allegedly sold his own kidney to afford an iPad 2 and iPhone. He told reporters that he had found an advertisement online that offered 20,000 yuan ($3000 US) for a kidney. So he made the journey to the city of Chenzhou in Hunan Province where, he says, a hospital cut him open, plucked out the organ, and paid him for his time.
"When he came back, he had a laptop and a new Apple handset," his mother, identified as Miss Liu, told the station, showing off the livid red scar where her son's kidney was removed, "I wanted to know how he had got so much money and he finally confessed that he had sold one of his kidneys."
The story has sparked much outrage in China, where the boy has become a symbol of the "immorality" of that country's "new capitalism." I don't suppose any revelations that they've just been taken in by a high tech version of Botox Mom will do much to change their minds, however. [Telegraph, photo via AP]
