Facebook Buys Enormous New Office

Facebook announced it will move to new offices nearly seven times the size of its current headquarters. Someone is planning on conquering the world, clearly.

Facebook said it will move to the million square-foot former Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo Park, California from its current 152,000-square-foot headquarters in Palo Alto. Even if Facebook consolidates the 265,000-square-foot annex it added a year ago, it's got room to more than double its square footage. Factor in options on two additional pieces of land, and Facebook says there's room to triple current staff to 6,100.

Of course, the new acquisition will eventually mean CEO Mark Zuckerberg no longer lives down the street from HQ. Good thing he's a renter.

And what's even crazier, they're going to devote a third of that new space to a strange holding area nobody will ever go to, and no one will be able to figure out how to negotiate the layout without first reading a 700-word introduction. Over 90% of the employees will hate it there, but the only answer they'll get from management is, "be patient, you'll get used to it, and this is what the advertisers want."

They'll also have the option of going back to the old campus, but something about that won't feel the same.

And then they'll realize that they were just being hysterical, whiny little brats, and the new space is actually at least as good as the old one - maybe even better! And that if they wanted to look like rational, thoughtful human beings, they'd stop going through this pointless cycle of hating something until it becomes the status quo and they forget why they hated it, and then begging for it back when the next minor change to their lives comes along.

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I've been out there and I understand why people call the office complex "Sun Quentin." It's truly out in the middle of nowhere and more than a little eerie. It could totally have a supervillain hideout feel.

It also looks remarkably like San Quentin. When my husband and I first saw the buildings going up, we thought it was going to be a jail.
