The History Channel has decided to cancel its 8-part miniseries The Kennedys, starring Katie Holmes, because the "dramatic interpretation is not a fit" for the channel. Good! The show was developed by the guy behind right-wing torture fetish show 24.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story of the show's cancellation yesterday. Greg Kinnear stars as John F. Kennedy in the miniseries, which is somewhat acceptable because Greg Kinnear is pretty cool. But really, Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy? Good lord. Anyway, that's all beside the point. Joel Surnow, who developed the miniseries, was the co-creator of the awful, Bush-era right wing propaganda program 24. So it's not hard to imagine how many liberties Surnow took with JFK and the rest of the Kennedy family, who aren't exactly popular among right wingers in the first place. The late JFK adviser Ted Sorenson read an early version of the script and described it as "vindictive." A rep for History's parent company, A&E Television Networks gave a statement to THR:

Upon completion of the production of The Kennedys, History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries on the network," a rep for the network tells The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. "While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand."

"Not a fit" as in, this miniseries is a nonfactual piece of shit and we finally get to wash our hands of it. The show will probably find a new life somewhere else. Any guesses?

Update: As was pointed out in the comments, the show will still air internationally. So much for that statement on the "History brand."
