Frankie & Alice: Halle Berry Is Racist Against Halle Berry
Here's a trailer for a psychological mystery/drama about a woman cleaved in two. Half the time Halle's a down-on-her-luck club dancer named Frankie, the other half she's a prim, racist, Southern white lady. So, split-personality. This is Halle Berry's Sybil!
Except Halle Berry already has an Oscar, for playing the same kind of washed-out, cigarette gnawing character she seems to be playing in half of this. Early reviews of the movie seem to suggest that while Berry is admirably committed to the high wire act, the rest of the movie — about her treatment and maybe recovery — doesn't really do enough to support her derring-do. Also apparently there's a line that goes "I'm crazy as a shithouse rat," which can never be taken seriously, ever. I mean, it's an AMAZING line. But it's not a serious line.
I'm also a little unsure about the low-budge look of the whole thing, a bargain basement quality that suggests that if Berry hadn't been interested — what actress can turn down the multiple personalities role? it's catnip! — it never would have been made. Plus, something like nine screenwriters worked on the damn thing, which is rarely a good sign.
That said, I love those big gold disc earrings and a makeup-free Halle Berry sadly smoking a cigarette is one of cinema's prettier images, so it could still be worth it. I don't expect Oscar to come knocking on this one, but you never know. After all, this world is crazier'n a shithouse rat.
