Wall Street director Oliver Stone placed his foot directly in his mouth over the weekend while talking with the "Any Given" Sunday Times of London, complaining that "Jewish domination of the media" meant that people ignored German atrocities against Russia.

Stone, who is not, you know, a guy known for tact, or subtlety, or sophisticated political opinions, was being interviewed about his documentary South of the Border, in which he interviews various left-wing political leaders from Latin America in an effort to give Rush Limbaugh something to talk about.

Anyway, his next project, a Showtime miniseries called The Secret History of America, came up in conversation, and Stone started talking about Hitler—one of the subjects of the miniseries—and, as you might imagine, the whole conversation went off the rails:

"Hitler was a Frankenstein, but there was also a Dr. Frankenstein," he said. "German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support. Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people."

Mr. Stone then proceeded to discuss what he called "the Jewish domination of the media," adding with an expletive that Israel had messed up "United States foreign policy for years."

Stone, for those of you playing at home, is half-Jewish, but raised Episcopalian. He later attempted to clarify and rescind his comments in a statement that included my personal favorite apologetic phrase of the year: "Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry."
